I will finally have me second draft, complete rewrite on "freedom's fall" done tomorrow so it's onto the long and tedious job of editing and tightening dialogue. I would put chapters up but given that it's a science fictonalized retelling of the fall of the wiemar republic and WW2, i am hesitant to put some chapters up due to violence, controversy, etc.
I'd love to help you edit. Editing's fun, but only when it's not my writing. I get so sick of it. lol, so yeah. I'd love to help you edit. (I'm pretty good with grammar. [Commas, dialog punctuation, spelling, ect.]) /CreakingSilence/
Just drop me a Pm where i can send chapters to you at..I finished checking over chapter 1 last night.
Something you might want to consider, and this helped me with my editing, is leave your book for a month, or two if you can bear it, because when you come back your perspective will have changed, you will have forgotten bits, and you'll see it from more of a 'reader' point of view, rather than a 'writer'. It certainly helped me- I hope it's a useful tip for you!
Would I be right in suggesting that this is exactly the sort of thing mammamaia specialises in? You could try giving her a PM.
actually, it is what i do mostly all day, every day... but only for violence-free works, so i couldn't help with this one... love and hugs, m
yeah unfortunately this deals with a fictionalized retelling of the fall of the Weimar Republic, which was a very violent period of history for all of us. I'm retelling it like I am so hopefully people can learn how history is trying to repeat itself :-(
if it's true events you're writing about, then i'd have no problem with the violence... it's only when violence is used as entertainment in fiction, that i can't help... so, drop me an email if you want and we can discuss editing... love and hugs, maia maia3maia@hotmail.com
I"d feel better not having to risk offending you, mom. I'm too nice to want to intentionally offend someone-unless they deserve it. Thanks for the offer though.
as i said, it won't be the least bit offensive if you're writing about true events... i am only against using fictional violence... i'm not squeamish, it's only a moral thing... so there's no risk involved... if you don't want me to help you for other reasons, that's ok, but don't turn down the offer on grounds that can't exist, ok?
It's not that I'm wanting to turn it down, it's just that I know to make certain historical things fit, it was told differently. Hitler's first attempt at power was the "Beer Hall Putsch" that happened in Munich. In my story, it's an attempt by the "nazi" movement in the book to try to assassinate the President of my Alliance with 'terrorists.' Between that and a couple things that make Kate a marked woman kind of deviate a bit, but were necessary to build up the character. As is a bit that showed things from her past that I mention in the "how well do you kow your character' thread i wrote. However, the climatic battle at the end of the book between the "Repulse" the "Prince of Wales" and the stolen TOR prototype that Kate and her crew have commandeered, is nothing but a clear retelling of the "Battle of Denmark Straight" in which the Hood was sunk by the Bismark. I just changed the Hood to Repulse b/c Kate had served on the Hood and I thought it would turn the reader against her. Once the WW2 section gets going, there are plenty of gruesome fleet battles that will occur, since Glaudacanal is going to influence a lot of them-and they were unfortunately very pitched, desperate and violent. Ultimately it's not that I really want to turn you down, it's not wanting to offend when I know sections will. Freedom's Fall is going to be controversial because of the political tones in it, and the fact that Kate's past of being a rape victim comes out. "Smuggler's Blues," while still following the weimar fall in nazi germany, is going to be controversial for another social issue that is seen in the news a lot lately too. I'm more worried about offending you when i don't want to, or need to.
