I posted! Thanks @ps102 for your help. If you have any lore questions, I am happy to explain as this new post adds a whole new layer. Also, I want your thoughts on a few things. PS and I discussed a few things so this post made more logical sense in-world and am happy to share our thoughts with you.
Also, I realized I, and a few others here have wanted to discuss upcoming posts with other players. So, I think we should re-work the transparency rule. Because honestly, I put that one in there, because of a bad IRL roleplay experience. I am also aware that my conversation with PS went off the rails and into the land of 'rule breaking' on my part. (PS is not to blame.) But also, there was a feeling of not wanting to spoil something FUN for everyone who would get to read my newest post for the first time. Because cool spoilers. So, I think we should re-work/remove this clause. Or modify it. Sorry for breaking the rules. I should be a better GM.
It is kind of complicated to be honest. I think its a lot better if something is agreed by everyone before it's established. The reason I think so is because of the possibility of a disliked change. What happens if something is privately decided and someone else isn't happy about it? We'd then need to revert changes and that's just inefficient. However, it's possible that this isn't really a risk because we're all adults and we act in consideration of each other. We wouldn't come up with a death of someone else's character, for example. This roleplay has essentially two types of content Commonly agreed content — Things like the setting, magic system, etc Personal content — Our characters for the most part. Most of us have a created a character and characters do often tend to be personal. I wouldn't, for example, like someone deciding on my character's romantic interest. Any changes to that rule would have to take this into account, IMO. I think it's fine if two players work together in PMs to make a super interesting twist. But, maybe (just a suggestion here) that twist shouldn't introduce major changes to the story as a whole. Things like changes to a character (or relationship between characters) sounds more reasonable for a PM. These are my thoughts on the subject. I would love to hear everyone else's thoughts.
Also, we really need a wiki honestly. The story has expanded considerably and you need to read 16 pages of the discussion thread just to catch up with certain details. A wiki would allow us to have a central place of information regarding the story. It would be a lot quicker to, for example, look up how the magic system works. We already kind of have this but without the massive organizational features a wiki offers like categories and pages. The discussion threads are still very important of course. What's decided here would end up in the wiki.
Yeah! I agree. A wiki would be great. And I will reply to the other post tomorrow. Because I have a few thoughts.
So @EFMingo hasn't returned since Feb 15th. I don't want the story to progress so far that his character is left behind / forgotten but I also know he had fun ideas and I don't want to write anything that prevents those from coming true. Any thoughts on how we should handle Nassim until EFMingo returns?
The best you can probably do is acknowledge Nassim's presence in the RP but make no developments around him. Maybe he gets an infection and he needs to stay in bed for days, just recovering. He can 'recover' when EFMingo returns.
Good morning everyone! I think you explained this very well. I do think it's the issue with decided change and also, from my side of the table, not wanting players to conspire against other players/characters to hurt them. IRL, I was worried that the information withheld was going to used for shock value. (Because that bad DM promised they would make everyone at the table cry by the end of the game.) So, that's the second part of the reasoning. But I DO think it needs to be revised. Because sending posts to ensure it is consistent with characters or lore should be okay. But like what happened yesterday was that I got talking about lore and ended up breaking the rule. And you're right. We are all adults and I do think that we are all kind enough NOT to kill off other people's characters. (Even though we all write them.) Also, I have been appreciating how everyone has been considerate of the different scenes each person want to write. Like Olive realizing she's powerful is a scene for PS. I like that you broke down the two essential things that occur in roleplay discussions. Which lead me to propose two possibilities: 1. Instead of a transparency rule, we just re-write/change it so no person can kill off another person's character. Or give them a romantic interest or gravely harm them without discussing it with it's creator. Please feel free to suggest other things one can't do. 2. I create another thread for "Draft Feedback" where players can post their drafts so we also cut down on the number of PMs to everyone. Because some scenes will contain characters from more than one player. On the note of lore, it gets a bit messy. Because I ended up expanding on it in the PM with PS. I think that we can ADD our own lore, but it must be subject to feedback. This may slow down the posting process, but like edits, it helps ensure everyone is on board. Any thoughts or feelings on this?
Well, I like what PS said. Having him laid up for a while would be useful to the story. But since @EFMingo hasn't logged on, I am going to say that if he's gone a whole month, I will put him on Vacation Mode. He can come back to the story anytime. But we will skip his turns until he does. As for Nassim, maybe just keep his scenes to a minimum and after he's healed, have him sneak off to go do something in character.
I would love to have a wiki, if that's something you want to set up and maintain. I don't know coding or anything, so it would be mostly on you. I am sure I could learn how to edit a wiki, though. The indexes are getting pretty full, honestly. So, I am all for this! Because you're right. Our threads are getting SO LONG.
Is there any problem with sending PMs? Any particular development would really only concern the creator of the character. I would prefer this than revealing my entry to the entire membership before it is posted in the official thread.
True. I didn't think of that. Never mind! Scratch this idea. I am also one to be very attached to my writing.
Since you're letting me handle it, I can look into better options than Wikia. I'll post here when I have updates about that.
YAY! I am excited. I am sure this is going to be great. Please let us know if you are all okay with PS making a Wiki. (For now, don't include details on Nassim. I don't want to place it on a wiki without consent.) But that brings me to another question, is it possible to make it private?
Sure it is! I can setup authentication and PM each of you passwords. I have a web server and a domain already so I can just host there. We should also ask @big soft moose whether it's okay to make an external private wiki for this.
Good! Because I was unsure if I wanted this info public as I am an over-protective writer. (Even though I know this place is also public. But still.) Anyway, @big soft moose, we could use an MooseMod to come answer some of @ps102's questions.
our general take on all off site stuff is that members can do whatever they wish so long as it doesnt include site branding or any suggestion that its formal, but if anything goes to shit mods and admin aren't getting involved... we've previously experienced groups who've set up discord servers and stuff who then expect us to moderate if it goes pear shaped...
Thank you for your moosedom on this topic. I appreciate it. Is it okay to say this roleplay is on Writingforums.org?
AnnouncementThere is a blizzard headed my way, so if I am suddenly gone, it's because I am trying to conserve computer/phone battery power.
Hello, tomorrow we are leaving on vacation, gone March 6 - 17. Sixteen family members rented an 8-bedroom house in Orlando! I am pretty excited. I will have access to a laptop and the internet while I am there, but I am not sure how much time I will have for writing. If my turn comes up, I will do my best to do an entry, I'll have to play it by ear. I will keep in touch!
