Yeah, I read about Torchwood coming to American TV. Is the actor who plays Captain Jack, going to still play him? I saw him in interviews and know that he introduced the bisexuality into the story because he's bisexual. So, I wonder if the US producers and actors will want to keep that aspect of the character. Anyway, it will be interesting.

However, the US has had shows with gay characters. When I was younger there was a good show with a favorite actor of mine, Tony Randal, called Love Sidney, but it was a situation comedy. I'm not sure that American media is going to go for an adventure show with an occasionally homosexual lead.

Also, I don't think people will enjoy Torchwood due to its lack of focus. I watched the first two seasons and found the show boring. The agents had all of these "epic" things happening but most of the time they Al pacino scream acted and fell in love. I've worked in some pretty intense environments and arguing and sex were the last things on my mind. But who knows, any TV that's imaginative and well written is fine with me.

John Barrowman is definitely not bisexual - he is gay. Russell T Davies the creator is also gay. He has signed up to play the part for seven years so we will see if it lasts that long. The character was omnisexual from the start so it was a creator/writer thing not an actor one. He has said he wants Jack to have a new boyfriend since they killed off Ianto 'sob'.

I don't know the sexual orientation of my children what I do know is I do not want any of them going through what some of my gay friends went through growing up with the feelings of not being normal etc I want my kids to see it as something they are etc

Bold: That's not true regarding topics like science fiction, comic books, and so on. The fans want cool and epic things to happen and to enjoy and feel excited reading the work. Most fans don't want Superman dumping Lois because he suddenly noticed how hot Jimmy Olsen is. A big draw for Superman fans is his ethics and concern for people.

For instance, in the last Superman film he used his xray vision to spy on Lois in her house with her boyfriend, and the audience I was in gasped!!! I did too, and was like this was written by a freaking moron! Then, I checked the IMDB boards and people were steamed because "Superman would never do that!" and it was a major violation of the fans' personal investment in the character. Also, he left what appeared to be his son to be raised by some random guy and he was extremely indecisive. Needless to say, the film did not do well and is far from a fan favorite.

    Sex Sells:

    That's a Post Hoc Analysis.

I don't request what's on TV and movies, but rather it's put in front of us to consume. I'm from before the VCR, which introduced porn to the population, and could easily list many changes porn brought to society. I don't recall a huge public movement to bring porn to the mainstream, rather pornographers knew that a car accident turns some heads and decided to cash in. People see it, are excited by it, and then the porno actors are role models for behavior. Meanwhile, Star Wars also sells and has been selling very well since 1977, and no one requested that either.

We have things placed in front of us and there's little choice. So, my overall point is that sex isn't the overall best seller, it's just easy and has gotten results due to the lack of choice.

    Twilight:

There's nothing odd about that. It's the story of the "badboy" you cant have.

    Dark Marketing:

You certainly correct about that. Many companies employ psychologists to figure out how to make people feel badly so they buy the product. Even the Rolling Stones put that in their Satisfaction song.

A character being gay or bisexual does not equal porn or even sex. I think that is Steerpike's point with his story it certainly is with mine.

It is perfectly possible for a character to be gay and not have sex in the entire book. The God Box by Alex Sanchez comes to mind.

I'm sure my four did in my first book but as it is told first person POV from the seventeen year old boy he never witnessed it.

Also, the portrayal of Camile and her relationship in Stargate Universe. They do a bang up job of portraying her relationship as just that, a relationship. The fact that she is lesbian is neither here nor there.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I believe the situation for non-heterosexuals has gotten worse, not better and I blame it on the media. I believe that a resentment has form due to PC attitudes, and it's becoming ugly. Thus, a "cool" gay character with a complex personality would be a good shot in the arm.

I find it extremely bizarre that a murderer like the character Dexter is way more popular than Captain Jack will ever be. But, Dexter has great writing for TV and it makes you like a character who should be repulsive. That goes back to what I said earlier; minorities should not just be token characters.

As I mentioned, Sex is just one TINY part of of human relationships and may have nothing to do with the totality of human relationships. People in long term relationships may have sex once a month, or less, and still love each other a lot. If the partner becomes sick then maybe you will never have sex again in your life. I believe that people who came from high functioning families know this and so they have a realtionship focus, rather than a sexual focus. The majority of sexual activity occurs in youth when the body is most programmed to be sexual, thus a sexually focused life in immature, in my opinion.

What I mean by "porno" sex especially for females is a the "hot" bisexual girl. You rarely see a character who looks masculine, say Ellen Degeneres, who is a hot, Kung Fu, bi sexual assassin and that's because it isn't porno enough. That's so many different kinds of anti-female stuff going on there, it's over the top. It reminds me of the old days when they'd have white actors playing black people, because the audience really couldn't tolerate black people, but wanted to see them sing and dance in their wacky way.
