    Mode of Narration: Telling Only

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by waitingforzion, Dec 4, 2017.

Would it be bad to write a story in which I simply tell what happens, and not include any description or sensory details? Do any modern authors do this?

Why would you want to do this?

Edited to add: I don't know if any modern or older authors do this.

Some Viking sagas are a bit like that, but even they have description ... you could write a book purely in telling mode and still have description , though I'm not sure why you would want to

It would depend on what’s happening I guess.

I’ve written two stories that are sort of like that for contests here that both won. One I removed visual senses by having the setting completely dark, but I still had descriptions for all of the other senses. The other was from the perspective of a computer slowly emerging into self awareness, it was mostly an internal struggle, so I needed very little else. Being a conputer, emotions and things were not included purposefully.

If the story is mostly internal i could see it working.

I think this must be a joke or the OP is confused about something.

The OP doesn't do humour (your other post about god being a woman will probably cause him to shit a cow) - check out his other threads for context
