    character names

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by HajPodge, Feb 21, 2013.

I need help creating names for some of my main characters. I want them to have a celestial type of name. I have solomon and annaluna so far. I'm stuck on my third main characters name, which I was thinking altair or astrid? These three characters are all related and are affiliated with the sun, moon, and stars.

Any suggestions or critiques of the mentioned names are greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you've already solved your own problem. What's the matter with either Altair or Astrid?

I don't think anythings wrong with them, I just don't know if I love the names. I'm leaning toward altair, but assassins creed used the name for one of its titles main characters.

Just in case you haven't already, check out the names of pagan gods and goddesses. Many of them are quite 'celestial' sounding.
Or look at the names of asteroids/galaxies/lunar bodies, though a lot of them are numbers (Asteroid 8877363).

Altaiir (Alt-I-ear), Axion (Axe-ee-on), Ot'erin (Oh-tear-in), Ghenden (Gh-en-din), Vendar (Ven-daar). These are names i just randomly came up with so i do not mind if they seem like trash.

If he's a cad, rake or skirt chaser, call the guy "Corridore Della Cresta."

It's a playful Sicilian slur, meaning something akin to "ridge runner."

Lee Child also used the name Jack in his books Jack Reacher, are we also going to exclude Jack from the names eligible for a new book character? You should not care about whether the name has already been used or not since it is an actual name and not originally created. If you name your character Harry potter and make him a wizard or Legolas and make him an elf then yes, people will condemn you for that, but other than cases such as these you are free to use already used names.

Btw Altair is a male name while Astrid a female. Are you looking for both? Either? Something gender-specific?

These are all very helpful comments. To be more specific I want a male name that will identify with the moon, sun or stars. Preferably the sun or stars. I'm not too sure on the female name annaluna to identify with the moon either, but im sure I want the female name to connect with the moon.

I used to teach a girl called Ana Luna :) It's not an uncommon firstname / surname combination in the spanish-speaking world.

    Love those ones!

Real names: Cosmo, Stella, Andromeda (-> Andy), Calliope ( -> Cally).
From my head: Solia, Celestia, Stelia, Adastra, Astra.

Altair's good (if used in a high profile way elsewhere, as is Sirius).
Other well-known stars that might make good names: Rigel, Procyon, Antares, Deneb, Alioth,

Have you thought of using the names of any moons orbiting planets in our solar system? Dozens from which to choose. Or how about using the names of mountains/volcanoes on said planets/moons?

    I like Venilia on Venus.
