The difference between us and a the planet is that we can fight off infections and the planet can't. The cancer that grows upon its surface can only be managed by humankind, which by curious coincidence happens to be the cancer.
Not so much cynicism as looking at it from a fractal perspective. I've been getting all up into the idea of fractal patterns in life. ~ The systems in a cell mirror the organs of the larger organism. ~ Groups of organisms can be thought of as organs within an environment ~ Individual environments can be thought of as organs to the entire planet. So, if we look at it from that perspective, humans have unchecked growth and consume resources at a rate within the planet/organism which makes us analogues to an infection or cancer.
::shrug:: It was getting too serious in here. I was ready for someone to break out the razor blades and iodine. And on that note...goodnight everyone.
*waves at Freshmaker* *to no one in general* (Sorry guys) I sometimes think period pains were invented by Nature to make my life miserable for 5 days.....let her have 23 days of peace and then kill her with the pain. *sigh*
Self-similar fractal structures still often have different emergent features at different levels. It's misleading to carry the analogy too far between different levels. Humans do not have unchecked growth. Like any organism, their growth is limited by available resources and environmental shifts, even though we may be under the illusion that we can supercede the laws of growth that limit other species. The higher the crowding, the greater the competition, and the greater the effects of cross-infection and similar growth-limiting factors. Other species also destroy their immediate environment by overcrowding. Deer populations destroy the food supply the depend on to survive when overcrowded, for example. We are the only species self-aware enough to recognize our own impact on tje environment, and to feel remors for it. That doesn't make us a cancer. That makes us truly unique, and worth preserving.
But when some of this very species becomes a disease for mankind, where it gnaws into the social equilibrium of peace and brotherhood, it becomes worse than cancer. It becomes a human bomb.
That is epic. I love it. I was trying to think of something funny to say, but it looks like you beat me to it...stupid work, always making me miss stuff in the WF!
Everyone is here while I'm at work, but then I come home and nothing. Good thing I have my fiance and Gran Torino to entertain me.
Well, time to begin another long night. No annoying/complainy-pants guests yet though so we're off to a good start.
Yeah, it's been on my mind already. I think tonight is going to be the more typical quiet though. If I'm not too lazy I might even get a bit of writing done. Twould be nice.
Good day everyone. Today is nice, and the weather is bright, and hot althought my eyes burn under the suns beauty. Slight wind, though only time can tell thou fondness for slight chills. ~ Mike
What part of the UK do you live in? Kent? Wherever it is, I'd rather be there. VERY overcast here right now, and I have a driving lesson.
Yes, I am here in Kent, at work actually but since the phones are not ringing and my mind is sidetracked with nothing else to do. I decided to do a little forum hunt. ~ Mike
