I don't live near an ocean but live on the shore of the great inland sea. Largest fresh water lake in the world. the one in russia is deeper but not bigger.
I love the smell and the sound when we have a storm and the waves roll the rocks on pebble beach just down the road from us.
The fish out of it are also great.

    most definetly it counts.
I love a river. We canoe up many around here.
Most you can only go by canoe as they were used as roads for moving logs and when the logs sank they stayed there. Now for a motor it would be just too hard on them so we are left to peace and quiet as we paddle along fishing as we go.
When the lake is too rough which is most of the time we have about 200 small lakes all within a 2 hour drive of home and at least that many rivers.
So Lake superior is beautiful the small lakes are really more interesting. We chase beavers and try to sneak up on loons and watch out for bears and moose.
I love the smells around the water even the swampy areas sometimes.

I grew up near the Thames River in southern Ont. It was badly polluted but over the years they have apparently cleaned it up so that they can eat the fish out of it again. j
I would love to back and see it now. It became polluted after we moved north and fixed up after I got married and moved further northwest.
Southern Ont. is supposed to be very much like England with the scenery and stuff.
