    Comma here?

    The year after she died my father tried it on for the first time.

    or

    The year after she died, my father tried it on for the first time.

    I suppose we have a dependent clause followed by an independent clause, so it should have a comma, but it seems to convey too long of a pause for natural reading...

    Since this is creative writing, it's your choice. If you want to leave it out, leave it out.

    ditto that...

    in fiction, comma use is often a matter of author style trumping rules...
