    comma needed?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by victo, Jun 23, 2015.

Is a comma needed after "write" below?

You should write, "I had gone to the supermarket before I went to the mall."

Should "Love you" be followed by a comma when it's a complimentary closing?

    Hi, Doreen,

    I enjoyed our evening ...

    Love you,

    Pete

You don't need or usually have a comma between Hi and Doreen.

Doreen is a vocative (direct address), so the comma is mandatory here.

While you're correct, no one I know uses that comma, especially when writing emails. If you left that comma in, I think most people would simply assume you made a typo! :p

You're right! The name is literally engulfed by commas... looks stupid.
