"That" is a very useful pronoun and conjunction, and isn't always replaceable without literary contortions that are worse than the alleged malady. That being said, it's always possible to overuse any word to the extent that it becomes intrusive, but that extent is not a simple matter of proportional word count. And that's that about that!
