    Copyrights and public art

Discussion in 'Traditional Publishing' started by Estragon64, Apr 26, 2021.

For the cover of my novel, I would like to use a photograph of a public sculpture. The photo was taken by my photographer friend, who is letting me use it for free, so there's no copyright issue there. However, is it possible that I have to credit the sculpture (and its creator) in the photo credit? Or get some kind of permission?

This is going to be one of those questions where the only valid answer is "ask a lawyer" ... it will depend on where you are and where the statue in question is (and in some jurisdictions what specifically you are using it for).
