The POV character I'm currently figuring out is named Timurid. He is the youngest of three sons born to the former ruler of the Western Mountain Region. As the youngest he frequently felt ignored by his parents. His older brother harassed him both verbally and physically. When Timurid reached the age of ten his older brother told him that he had molested him as an infant and that their oldest brother knew of it but, never did anything to stop it.
He fled from the kingdom after receiving this confession and spent three years with one of the aboriginal mountain tribes near the desert. In that three years he converted to the religion of the old "savage" gods, engaged in tribal warfare and honed has skills as a warrior.

He returned to the Mountain Kingdoms after his father died. His oldest brother was fighting a civil war against the Eastern Mountain Kingdom as well as lending aid to the Kingdoms of the Temperate region against an army of rebelling Southern Islanders. At his oldest brothers request he led a small party of tribal warriors into the Temperate region to help push back the rebels. After the commander as well as a large portion of the temperate region's host died of the plague he took over command and led an army to victory at the age of thirteen. After his victory he was chosen to squire for a knight in the Temperate region. He killed said knight in a Melee Tournament at fifteen years of age. The ruler of the Temperate region was pressured by the knight's family members to execute Timurid but, was convinced by Timurid's oldest brother to spare his life and exile him to the Southern Islands.

When Timurid appears in the story he has been living on the Southern Islands for sixteen years. He has been made responsible for keeping the Mountain Kingdoms and Temperate Kingdoms updated on the status of all the islands and its inhabitants. He also acts as a kind of law enforcer on the islands. He is in command of a small company of a few hundred men. The company is made up of former prisoners from the temperate region. A certain percentage of political prisoners, rapers and murderers are sent to him for enlistment. He has developed his own kind of trial system to determine whether or not the men sent to him are allowed to join his ranks. His decision is based on what crimes the men have committed as well. For example rapers are given the choice to either join the company's harem as a Hijra and be "used as a woman" or sacrificed to his old gods but, child rapists are simply executed, as he holds nothing but contempt for men willing to commit such vile acts.

He is quite happy with his life on the Southern Islands until he hears that his older brother has killed their oldest brother usurping the throne. He is conflicted about whether or not to return to the Mountain Kingdoms and take the throne. He realizes he is obviously at a huge disadvantage given that he commands a company of a few hundred men and his brother controls the armies of every mountain lord that owes him fealty. He also believes in the work he is doing on the Southern Islands. Without him the small Southern Island tribes lack any protection from the larger, more developed kingdoms on the islands.

Timurid is extremely tough and an incredibly skilled warrior. He is considered by many to be something of a military genius and a cunning strategist. He has a healthy fear of his gods. He loves to drink and have sex but, more than anything else he loves a good fight. For him planting his mace in the side of an enemy's skull is infinitely more satisfying than the inside of the fairest of maidens. He is extremely charismatic, he could meet a man on the field, beat him bloody then sit him down for a few drinks and perhaps a woman or two and the following day have the same man fighting by his side.

His problem is his traditional ideas about the world and his stubborn, head strong ways. When he gets back to the mountain kingdom how will its inhabitants receive him? He's been away from the kingdoms for more than sixteen years, will he even recognize his homeland anymore? The one thing that could mean the end for him is his inflexibility.

I imagine this guy as a sort of East Indian, fourteenth century, Rooster Cogburn. I was also inspired a lot by the Persian Emperor Timur. I've still got as lot to think about when it comes to this character, any critiques or suggestions are very welcome.

I'd love to read a POV chapter for this guy. He just sounds like such an awful person I'd be interested in learning how he developed his beliefs.

Thing is, he's actually less awful than many of the characters. His beliefs are common and endorsed by the government.

Not giving name: Believed to be the manifestation of evil in the Galaxy. He is a megalomaniac who has created a race of being, who have then built a vast planet spanning empire. He is thought of as needlessly violent and a tyrant who wages war for his own ends, but inside his empire the citizens lead a good life in total devotion to him as their "saviour". He willingly delivers harsh punishments on traitors and enemies. It is later revealed that he was attempting to unite the Galaxy for millennia in order to prepare it for the coming of the true darkness, and that he believed the inhabitants of the galaxy would be doomed due to their infighting. Thus his megalomania isn't self centred. Whenever a member of his created species dies he feels it as he shares a bond to each and every one of them, this creates huge amounts of emotional and physical pain, especially since he loves/cares for all life. Therefore if a commander in his armies commits a needless crime he executes them as it weakened the galaxy more than needed, and killed more innocents than required.

So at the end of the day you start of believing him to be a truly despicable tyrant, but realise his actions are for goodness in eyes (they still are really), but he is really misguided in some ways and still not fully "good" with some very obvious flaws by the end. I tried to make him quite a sympathetic character what with his huge sacrifice. He also sacrifices much more which I haven't written about.

    Location:
    California
    Name: Leo
Height: A little under 6ft, isn't meant to be specific
Weight: Around 150-180. Meant to be pretty fit.
Hair: Dark brown, long but neat/styled. Sort of like this, but without the beard: http://shorthaircutforwomens.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Top-Mens-Hairstyles-Spring-2015.jpg
    Eyes: Intelligent, dark green eyes
Appearance details: Mid 20's, average height, slim/fit. Not quite rich, but definitely not poor. Looks like he'd work on Wall St.
Dress: Stays up to date with current trends, but because of the setting, usually outfits like these: http://www.outfittrends.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/relaxed-yet-stylish-men-vacation-outfits-1.jpg
    Dominant character trait: Ambitous, eccentric
    Contrasting character trait: Arrogant, impulsive
    Extra information:
    - Leo is a Persian American living in California. He works a pretty average job at an marketing firm, and makes good money. Generally a confident guy, he's made it pretty far socially, rubbing shoulders with some of the elite of Southern California. Although his confidence is a facade, and truly is extremely dissatisfied with who he is, and decisions he's made in the past. Impulsive and sometimes blatantly self-destructive, he's picked up some pretty bad habits in his life.
    - Absolutely cannot keep a girl. It usually doesn't take long for his partners to realize Leo's a dirtbag

In the story, Leo ends up heading to an ultra-elite, high class resort in the pacific. It's there he ends up in a time-loop, doomed to repeat the same exact day/night indefinitely. This day just so happens to be the greatest day of Leo's life. It's a day/night in the lap of luxury, full of money, girls, an unfathomable amount of drugs/alcohol, and he's the center of attention. It's like something straight out of a rap song. At first he's pretty satisfied, he gets to live this same exact day for what's essentially forever. He couldn't be bothered, it's a great day. Repeating this day changes him though. He starts out getting worse, he's even more arrogant, impulsive, and superficial than he was before. But eventually, gradually, he gets sick of it. With what's pretty much infinite time to reflect and contemplate, his entire state of mind changes. He's over the conceited people, the superficiality, and for lack of a better word, bullshit that money and status bring.

As yet un-named Marine Lance Corporal: Let's call him LCpl Schmuckatelli for now. He's skimming the fine line between "write what you know" and author-insert for his basic character, so he's pretty smart, slightly too impressed with that fact, and always looking for the path of least resistance. He's got issues with authority; when his superiors tell him "Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way," he tends to get further screamed at for stepping to the side and grabbing a beer. What? You were the one who put it on the options menu, sir.

He'd be fairly unremarkable if it were not for the fact that he got badly blown up by an IED, losing both his legs and one of his arms, along with suffering from TBI. This event led him to be stuck sharing his body with:

Charlie: Charlie is an alien bodysnatcher. God, these always sound terrible when written out this way, don't they? Anyway, Charlie is an alien bodysnatcher, and none too bright. Charlie's species is somewhat insectile, and their life cycle consists of a Queen sending out bodysnatchers to take over hosts. The bodysnatchers are electrical in nature, although they're probably going to need to have some physical form to get them started. They go out and take over hosts, inducing the hosts to gorge themselves on whatever's available, then take the body back to the hive for the Queen to lay an egg in. The thing is, the Occupants (bodysnatchers) aren't very smart; the species evolved to prey on basically ruminants. However, as a result of this Occupancy, LCpl S. has got the ability to take over other humans' bodies, however, he's stuck sharing control of said bodies with something that has the same mental capacity and general life goals as a four year old. If his attention wanders for a moment, he may find that he's gotten up, walked into the nearest ice cream shop, and is busy shoveling Rocky Road into his mouth with both hands. Charlie got his name because the last person he was Occupying before the MC was named "Cpl Charleston".

There are a couple I'm currently working on now.

The closest one to done - as in editing - is the sci fi story, 'First to Battle.'
It's set in the future and takes place most of the time aboard the Republic light cruiser Pegasus, known affectionately as the Peggie to her crew.
The MC is named Hera Noble and she is the first of her kind to reach command rank in the Fleet Space Arm, her 'kind' being an engineered life form.
    Yes, she's a space elf...
But an elf with racial baggage, as it was the elves who started the war that weakened the Republic in advance of an even deadlier war with the newly formed Albion Empire. Less than a hundred years later and animosity against 'gene-dolls' still runs deep. What also doesn't help her position is that she's merely using the command position as a stepping stone for a desk job, what is basically called a 'Grand Tour,' and most of the crew including the captain are aware of this.
She is unsure of herself from the beginning, believing that her future is on the ground and administering, with hopes of a high paying job in the private sector when her commission is up. But any plans she or anyone else may have had change drastically when they find that they must stand alone against an Imperial incursion that could set off an even deadlier war.
Hera finds herself having to fill the role of master and commander with the fate of an entire world depending upon her getting things right the first time. With little prior actual experience, she is filled with doubt but also finds inspiration and support from a surprising individual, who also seems to draw out of her the attributes of the commanding officer she never thought she could be.
Hera doesn't smile openly, rarely showing her teeth as past experience has shown that people react with trepidation and even fear at the sight of her distended canines. This changes however as the chrysalis of the experience changes her. Another attribute of her elf heritage are eyes that change color depending upon her mood. Normally they are a pale blue that lightens to nearly white with fear and midnight blue with anger. However, there is another color that coined the term 'Red-eyed Goblin' during the first war, and in fact during later stories she will become known universally as the Goblin, though she looks like nothing resembling that kind of monstrosity.
And as will be noted in the story, why create a stronger, faster human but skimp on the looks? A secondary character notes that she has the face and figure of a lingerie model, with long, bright copper hair worn in a thick braid, and eyes of light blue and delicate pointed ears. Among other elves who hide themselves by bobbing their ears and grinding down their canines, she is an oddity in that she does not hide her heritage.

I vacillated back and forth as to whether or not to make her empathic, but that turned out to be a crutch that only helped one pivotal scene, as well as hindered others, so it was dropped. No mental mind powers reside in her pretty head, just a dawning drive and determination to be the officer she never thought she could be, and to make her actions count when finding herself first on the battle-line...

The second MC I'm thinking of is in a story that is no way near complete, much less even truly started. It's a swords and sorcery tale titled, 'The Blaze of Arlington.'

The MC is named Cerise Arlington, and in the story she is Queen Cerise the First of the Kingdom of Tarnis. She came to the throne at a young age, but was surrounded by loyal advisors and friends that helped her cement her rule during the following two years. But at nineteen, she is still young and filled with a wont for adventure that will not be denied, no matter how ill-advised. One such 'adventure' leads into the distant wilds, where Cerise and her party will vanish into history.
The following hundred plus years will see her kingdom ravaged by war and a series of violent rulers, but she is still cherished in the hearts and minds of the gentry who have turned the golden age in which she lived into near myth.
The story itself will follow two paths, one in the past following Cerise and her friends and the other in the 'present' day as a rag-tag band of adventurers race against other treasure-hunters and fame-seekers on their quest to find fabled Queen's Rest, the grave site of Queen Cerise...
Cerise is tall and athletic, with fire-red hair, green eyes and pale skin. And were it not for the over-large 'Arlington nose,' she would be considered a classical beauty. Because of her youth, she is brash and impulsive, two attributes that fight with her role as Queen, and two attributes that will allow an unknown enemy to gain the throne and destroy her home - and send her to her grave...

    Name: Demitry Charles Troy.
Race: He's a mutt. Got a bit of a lot of things in him.
    Specialization: Pyrokinetics.
Height: 5'5". But he doesn't want to talk about that.
Weight: 95 pounds. poor kid never eats.
    Hair: Black as my soul.
Eyes: Kind of a violet/grey thing going on.
Birthplace: In a secret compound outside of Memphis.
Appearance details: He would be kind of olive skinned if it weren't for the fact that he never goes outside. He has an eighth not scar beneath his left eye, a long thin scar from his left arm pit to almost een with his naval, and a chunk of flesh missing fromm his right calf because of an incedent with his older brother and a dog. His hands are unusually rough for his age because he does a lot of things with his hands.
Dominant character trait: Sarcasm and aloofness.
Contrasting character trait: easy to make him uncomfortable.
Family: Amanda Troy (mother, grade A b-word, insert whichever you think appropriate), Jefferey Troy (father, cold bastard), Nicolai Troy (brother, insane psychopathic freak), Emmilina Troy (sister, tries too hard.)
Extra information: He likes to draw, he's surprisingly clean for a teenage boy, and would do anything for his sister. He's been to Europe, the funds for which he raised himself.

Mine is a bit more of an ensemble piece but if I had to pick two main characters I'd go with:

Taryn Bellin, 31, Independent freighter Captain and war veteran. She's hardened, loyal and driven. She can somewhat stand off-ish toward most people. Taryn would be the sort of person who places a high value on friendship but doesn't have many friends. The most important thing to her is her small crew, most of whom she considers as family.

Jon Lachlan, 46, retired Navy Colonel. Jon had spent twenty fours years of his life in the military. Now recently retired he is struggling to find a place that can fill the void left without the military. He has saw action in numerous conflicts but by the time the 'war' rolled around he was not in a frontline role. Even so, he is beginning to struggle with some of the memories from his time in the service. He is warm, friendly and surprisingly open for a man who worked in Intelligence.

    - Good-natured, timid, African-American teen genius gets frequently harassed at school for being a cartoon-loving nerd and becomes bitter.
    - Takes on like a Jerk Lord Daffy Duck-style persona in a hugely popular online game world for escapism, hindering others' enjoyment and getting away with it for a good while.
    - Defeated by a new rival, with ease.
    - More bitterness + obsessive lust for vengeance.
    - Publicly humiliated by rival and reduced to a laughing stock within the aforementioned online community.
    - Existential crisis ensues.

My story is a hard-scifi so I've managed to create a few character traits for my protagonist that fit well with the genre and make for great plot devices.

    Name: Milo Beckert.
    Race: Centauri-German(Placeholder Name).
    Occupation: Astrophysicist.
    Age: Early thirties
    Height: 6ft.
Weight: 130 ibs in Earth gravity.
Hair: Thick, brown, and wavy, cut short but still hard to get a comb through. Retains the same shape regardless of gravity or a lack thereof.
Eye color: Blue. and a slight blue tint at the sclera of his eyes(linked with bone diseases)
Birthplace: Unknown, but raised on a small planet orbiting Proxima Centauri.
Appearance: Abnormally tall and slender as a result of being born in zero gravity.
Character traits: Very intelligent, sociopath, pathological liar, poor social skills, an all around selfish asshole but lacks the need for political ambitions or fame. Has a fondness for sweets and hard candies. A love for writing and interpreting poetry despite the lack of basic human emotions.
Some negative traits(if the ones above weren't bad enough): Weak and brittle bones as a result of being born in zero gravity, always in a perpetual state of pain due to frequent fractures. Severe addiction to opiates due to living in a perpetual state of pain.

Haven't seen the show but one of my friends love to draw comparisons with him. If anything, I'd say he's too similar to Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes in some aspects.

Not too familiar with Sherlock Holmes. Perhaps the two share a lot in common as characters.
