It's ALWAYS just someone calling himself or herself that, whether or not they've had formal training, and whether, training or not, they truly know shit from Shinola. There's nothing magical about taking classes, or about whatever you consider formal training. If you go into business delivering editing services, you're an editor. It's not necessarily a scam if you're no good at it; incompetence need not be willful. Nor does the lack of formal training make someone a fraud. Some people have a love of literature and an unfailing sense of what needs fixing. Btw, as regards the over-qualification of the term 'career', consider the tern 'career criminal'. Actual training is an embellishment, not an essential property of the word career.
A career criminal isn't the same as a regular criminal. It's someone who's dedicated himself to the path, spent a lot of time on it, etc. Someone who shoplifts a candy bar isn't a career criminal.
Well, I think most people understand what I'm saying here. Calling oneself an editor does not mean one is qualified to actually be one. But if you want to keep nitpicking, go ahead.
