In the movie Aliens, when Ripley said they should "take off and nuke the site from orbit", I always thought she said "nuke the site for morbid". I mean until very recently I just assumed this, and thought it meant until everything is dead. I watched it with subtitles on once and had a big WTF moment.

In Conan the Barbarian, after Conan and Valeria had been captured the old king played by Max von Sydow asked them where their partner Subadai was. Valeria said something I couldn't understand, and very loudly the king said what I always thought was "a liar's Ahab!" Again, until very recently, when I decided to switch on subbies and discovered it was really "a lion ate him!" It turns out that was also what Valeria had said. He was repeating it ironically because right after she said it 2 guards brought Subadai into the throneroom. Facepalm moment.

Sorry if this is too political but it's perfect for the thread:

Just ran across this in a comment on Amazon about DVD cases:

"I love these cases! I was a little lenient in buying these at first but I’m so glad that I did."

... I think the word you're looking for is hesitant. Hesitant about (not in).

Just heard a radio commercial for an automotive restoration place, done by the DJ on the air, and she said "Get a free estimant." I think she mixed up estimate with testament, probably thinking it has something to do with testimonials.

Sounds more like "free estimate" to me.

To clarify, I think the reason she combined Estimate and Testament is because she has some confused notion that Testament has something to do with Testimonials. Of course I could be overthinking it.

    I followed some clickbait.

    "Don't add salt to injury."

The lyrics to this song are all in order, however when she's singing it, she says "The way that we feel might have to be sacrified" - instead of sacrificed.

    In a Manner of Speaking
    Nouvelle Vague
    In a manner of speaking
    I just want to say
That I could never forget the way
    You told me everything
    By saying nothing

    In a manner of speaking
    I don't understand
How love in silence becomes reprimand
But the way that I feel about you
    Is beyond words

    Oh, give me the words
    Give me the words
    That tell me nothing
    Oh, give me the words
    Give me the words
    That tell me everything

    In a manner of speaking
    Semantics won't do
In this life that we live, we live, we only make do
    The way that we feel
    Might have to be sacrificed

So in a manner of speaking
    I just want to say
That just like you I should find a way
    To tell you everything
    By saying nothing

    Oh, give me the words
    Give me the words
    That tell me nothing

    Oh, give me the words
    Give me the words
    That tell me everything
    Oh, give me the words
    Give me the words
    That tell me nothing
    Oh, give me the words
    Give me the words
    That tell me everything

Not dissimilar to your Jimi Hendrix example: Alexander Rybak - "Europe's Skies" (Official Music Video)

I don't know you, but I need more time
    Promise me you'll be mine
Birds are flying over Europe skies,
Tell me please why can't I?

    sounds like:

I don't know you, but I need more time
    Promise me you'll be mine
Birds are flying over Europe's guys,
Tell me please why can't I?

My husband is full of these, and I have to bite my tongue not to correct him. Some of his typical ones:
    "Nip it in the butt"
    Using "exasperate" instead of "exacerbate"
"running rickshaw all over me" (Isn't it "running rampant"?)
I'm sure there are more but these are his most-commonly used ones lol.

I think the correct phrase is "riding roughshod."

Have just read "this emotion inflicts individuals" - sic.

    Cf. "this emotion afflicts individuals"

Shockingly, I just saw this on the BBC:
"up the anti", instead of "up the ante"

This reminds me for "per say" instead of per se.

Was this a comment on how the BBC is (or used to be) referred to fondly as "Auntie"?

Lesser of two equals instead of lesser of two evils

Mute point instead of moot point
