That way, if the reader is in a really bad mood, then they read this happy joyful yay for flowers poem and they get angry and then move to depression.

Yeah, I guess it's just a trick way to make your readers happy when they're angry. Brilliant. :D

An interesting query and one that I too find to be true. Over the past few weeks I've been writing little rough drafts for scenes I plan to include in a sequel to a piece I wrote a couple of years ago and I find that no matter what I set the situation up as it somehow always veers into a depressing mood. Twice I've had a character I quite like collapse in tears when it was never my intention; once when I had her engaging in a personal preference that her friend walked in on, greatly embarrassing and humiliating her; the other occured when I tried to set up a physical intimacy between her and another character - said character violently rejected her advances and made her very upset. I'm so cruel. :p

That's not to sam I'm not capable of writing happy, funny, uplifting stuff - I am, it's just that - much like Elfen Lied - it is a reward after suffering depression and angst. :D I could write it, it's just a matter of where to put it within the story and seeing if it fits and/or is needed or appropriate in the series of events.

As another poster rightly said, it's not so much depressing as intended to be more realistic - if everything went perfectly it'd seem so cliche, but then if it didn't go perfectly it'd also be considered cliche. It's a terrible dilemma that we all must face, I suppose. Though as I said, the little pieces I wrote are merely rough drafts, so the final project could go in a seperate direction if I so wished.
