My newest and brightest little idea has to do with an Empath, a young man who was born feeling everyone else's feelings. As usual, character development is well under way. However, as usual, there's no fricken' plot. I have an Empath, who also has some telepathic abilities, and has the working name of "Ethan." I already know the real name is gonna start with E, but I can work with the name later. Right now... WHAT DA HECK IS ETHAN DOING?? Thank you.
Randomly feeling everyones feelings would be hell, you wouldn't be able to stand it. What if the plot explored his attempts to achieve some mastery or control over his powers, or else his descent into madness when said attempts failed? I suppose rather than just tossing you ideas we should be giving more general advice: think of a conflict that it needs Ethan's empathy to resolve, and put that conflict at the centre of your plot.
So you have a character, but no story? Think again. I'm sure you've had other story ideas before, ones that never got written down. Try matching that story to this character- no matter how strange the match- and see how the story would go down.
