    Or

    We were there for an eternity?

    That is a line you should not use in any story at any time.:)

    If it was me? I would say it 'felt like an eternity'. And for clarification, you can use any sentence you want.

    EDIT: To clarify further - you put 'an' in front of it if what you're describing is not actual eternity. So.. your second example is technically correct, but a little awkward.
