“So that means we’re going forward, and there’s no point moaning and groaning about it...”

“Ah, but you see my dear boy...” Teddy started in true Sherlock fashion. “...there’s a difference between ‘going forward’ and ‘going mad with power’.” The mechanic strode slowly around the chairs, with one hand behind his back, and the other smoking an imaginary pipe.

“Don’t think this unseen enemy of Eximius will be any different.”

“Admittedly, we are all a little curious - that's why we are here. However I’m not about to just jump on a boat with these two. Yes things have been a little suspicious, but I’ve not seen this so called ‘enemy’. How do we know there’s even a threat?” He paused just in front of Lawrence, and measured him up. “How do we know they aren’t the enemy, and this isn't a trap?” He walked away and over to Ben. “I mean, we are all sat in one place.”

“If it was only so simple.” Teddy sighed, sat on the couch arm, and wearily placed his head on the copper’s. “Tell me it’s all going to be ok, Ben.”

Baley swallowed hard as everyone went on about 'instincts' and 'kill or be killed'. The facts were adding up to one big fat answer she knew she didn't want to know. She didn't want to be in a life or death situation...or kill anybody for that matter. Is that where this was leading to; using her power for the benefit of these folks she just met? To save the day; to save Grygla from all evil?

Seemed like an awful lot to ask.

"The point is, we're all still here. So that means we're going forward, and there's no point moaning and groaning about it, or yelling doomsday. If anyone wants to leave, I think now is the time." He looked around, raising his brows.

Baley tensed, keeping herself pinned to the wall. "Hey, I'm only here 'cause ya'll are my ride home. I'm not walkin' in the dark," Baley said. As she looked at Liriope, an irritable scowl passed over her face. "And fightin' and killin' people, is not where I stand. Murder in any way shape or form, I'm not gonna do. So whatever ya'll say, don't expect me to participate."

    Camille: Pricked

"As for Camille, even if she does understand whatever you're jabbering about, which I highly doubt, she's still just a kid. And you seem to have no problem letting her get int he way of danger. Btu like I said, I'm not gonna stick my nose in that." He sighed and leaned his head back.

Camille bristled. "I'm not a child. I'm 23 and more than old enough to deal with the tangle. Ben doesn't have any say about what I will or will not do."

Suddenly Ben grinned. "Camille, sugar...You're forgetting something. I still have the keys, the cash, and the badge."

"And I still have an ass hat for a best friend." She muttered, slouching against the arm of the couch.

“If it was only so simple.” Teddy sighed, sat on the couch arm, and wearily placed his head on the copper’s. “Tell me it’s all going to be ok, Ben.”

Ben shoved Teddy with enough force to send him sprawling on the floor. "Do that again, and you will be spending the night stuffed in a locker. I'm sure Fred would be willing to unlock the building for me."

“Do that again, and you will be spending the night stuffed in a locker.”

“A little sensitive, aren’t we?” Teddy brushed himself off and moved over to the other couch arm. “But as long as I’m in the locker with Camille, I won’t mind.” Now perched on the burgundy leather, he reached into his pocket and relit his imaginary pipe.

“So whatever ya’ll say, don’t expect me to participate.”

“But why? Deep down, you know this is everything you wanted.” Teddy walked over, eyes locked with Baley’s. “I can see it, you want this. Here in this group, you can be yourself. You can be safe.” He then turned to Eva. “Well maybe not with her. She gives me the creeps. But everyone else seems alright.”

    Liriope

"Hey, I'm only here 'cause ya'll are my ride home. I'm not walkin' in the dark," Baley said. As she looked at Liriope, an irritable scowl passed over her face. "And fightin' and killin' people, is not where I stand. Murder in any way shape or form, I'm not gonna do. So whatever ya'll say, don't expect me to participate."

Liriope patted Baley's wrist. "No one is asking that of you", he said calmly. For Ben and Camille he had no patience--Nixes always said he could never suffer a fool--but for Baley he could be sweet. "If you chose to not participate, no one is gonna stop you. But if you do chose to come, then you could use your dirt power to help protect us. But hey"--he shrugged--"it's your chose. No pressure, seriously."

To Ben he said, "Why'd you shove poor Ted? Couldn't you have just push him gently or told him to move? Gah, with cops liek you around, I feel all warm and safe." He rolled his eyes. Ben acted all righteous one moment, then goes and hits that poor dude over something miniscule. And to Teddy, Liriope said, "Just stay away from him, he's a grouchy turd. As for Ben turning out to be an Exceptional, that would be a huge one in a thousand coincidence, so I doubt he is one. As of now, he's just here to reign in Cammy", he said matter-of-factly. "If it come to an Exceptional fight with powers and all that, he'll probably get picked off right away. And that's all I'm saying on the subject." Lirirope zipped his lips and threw away the key.

    Ben and Camille: Monster

"Some of us have actually tried doing something useful with our lives." Ben muttered under his breath.

The green monster had bitten him hard and his usually even temper had been flayed raw. Between Camille's mad starts and Ted's ceaseless banter, he was about ready to put his fist through a wall. Liriope might consider him bad tempered, but he had his reasons.

Camille settled her curly head against his shoulder, her glasses halfway down her nose. Dark circles stood out like bruises beneath her midnight dark eyes. "I don't know if it's fear, foolishness, or the fact that the male brain doesn't reach maturity until, but I'm glad you're here, Ben." She murmured. "Power doesn't make the man, the heart does."

"Liriope is probably about ready to gag by now, but that is one thorn we can keep jabbing into his lazy hide." She added with a weary smile.

    Liriope

Liriope overheard Camille's snipes about the heart making the man. He chose to ignore it. What was the point arguing with those two? They were so wrapped up in each other they didn't see anything else. Camille was trying to say he wasn't as much of a man as Ben, which made Liriope's shoulders shake with mirth. If Ben shoving Teddy over and making stupid threats and trailing after Camille like an obedient lapdog made him a man, then Liriope would rather be a boy.

"Oh, and Ben--you probably couldn't lock Teddy in a locker, seeing as he can control lightning", Liriope couldn't help but comment, smiling lopsidedly. "You would be fried in a second. But I guess you're too much of a man to see that..." I mean really, did this guy really think he stood a chance against an Exceptional? He was such a joke! Liriope yawned exageratedly and put his head between his knees. "Wake me up when something interesting happens", he mumbled.

Evangeline, not to be ****ed with

“Here in this group, you can be yourself. You can be safe,” Teddy said, trying to slip Baley a verbal roofie and woo her into becoming a full-fledged accomplice. “Well maybe not with her,” he added, looking to Eva. “She gives me the creeps. But everyone else seems alright.”

“I was going for ‘sensible,’ but ‘creepy’ will have to suffice,” Eva replied dispassionately. She’d been markedly quiet through the entire exchange, finding it rather juvenile. Frankly, she felt this was all beneath her, though she was sensible enough not to say so and keep her mouth shut when she had nothing kind to say.

On the other hand, there are times where sensibility must take a backseat to productivity. Presently, productivity had dropped to nil. Someone has to break this stalemate…

“Sheena’s theory certainly has merit,” Eva said, looping back around to a topic they’d exhausted ages ago, “but I think the situation is more complex than some of you realize. Natural selection is a very primitive motivation and almost no situation is ‘kill or be killed,’” she added, with a reassuring glance at Baley. “Killing is merely a means to an end, not an end goal in itself. In other words, this unknown ‘enemy’ is hunting us because they want something.

“I believe they want our powers,” she said adamantly. “Unlike our dear friend here,” she gestured to Ben, “they recognize their inadequacy and are driven to be better, no matter the cost. Not to mention these abilities are a marketable commodity, and carry obvious monetary value. Imagine the possibilities. Imagine what could be done if our talents were studied, reverse engineered, and perfected.

“Instantaneous travel,” she looked to Shyla, “earthquake prevention," she looked to Baley, “wireless power transference and generation,” she looked to Teddy, “flood control and drought prevention,” she looked to Camille. Eva smirked. “Hell, I don’t blame them for hunting us down like animals. Like guinea pigs or lab rats, if you’ll pardon the cliché. In this room, we have a cure for all the world’s ills, just waiting to happen.” She folded her arms, suddenly feeling quite comfortable with these people.

“If realizing this makes me ‘creepy,’ so be it,” she declared. “I’ve had a century to ponder why people like us always disappear, always die, always vanish. I used to think it was because we’re the bad guys, or we’re the square peg and the world is a round hole, and we just don’t fit in. Lately, I’ve come to realize it’s not like that at all. We are well-rounded and perfect, or closer to perfection than mere humans can understand. It’s this world that is rotten and foul and full of holes, in need of constant patching. I should know, since I’ve been fixing it up since well before most of you were born.

"If someone out there wants me, they need only ask. But if they insist on hunting us down like animals, I will behave like an animal. And when that time comes..." She gave Ben an icy look. "...neither cop, nor soldier, nor God Himself, will stand in my way."

    Ina Holt & Lawrence

Ina sat slumped in her chair, too tired to catch what was going on. She had barely noticed the owl that had perched on her shoulder, until it had already flown away. As the group bickered around her, her attention drifted to a long shadow climbing lazily up the wall. The shadow was oddly defined for the dim light, and stood out from the other shadows around it. I wonder what's making that... Ina thought, glancing at the fire and its surroundings to see what may have cast the shadow.

"Enough, all of you," Lawrence said, his expression unchanged, but with a hint of irritability in his voice, "We're getting distracted. Some good questions were asked, and I'd like to get to them." He turned his gaze to Sheena, "You're quite discerning. While it's true we're a threat to mankind, we're not up against mankind. At least not entirely. Dirk left us a lot of information about our enemy, and their plans. It seems our enemy has had many different leaders in the past, and their organization follows their ideals. It's like a bastard monarchy, with the most dangerous Exceptionals as 'kings'. Their newest leader only took power two years ago, which incidentally, is when the violence against us came to a climax.

From what Dirk's notes told us, they aren't trying to destroy us because we're a threat. They're trying to destroy us, because they want to be able to control who can be Exceptional and who can't. Their leader is trying to play god, and he's succeeding. Their injections work, though their test subjects haven't been able to survive more than one dosage. It seems that one ability is the limit for a normal human body. With true Exceptionals being picked off, it won't be long before the only ones will be the ones created by the serum. Once they have enough of the serum, they can simply give it to the highest bidder, keeping the most powerful abilities for themselves. We need to expose them before they can get that far."

"As for how well they know us," Roland interjected, "Fortunately, their grunts can't sense whether someone is Exceptional or not, like we can. They gather information through surveillance, and interviewing others. In Coventry, they traveled in pairs, and wore grey suits. They didn't have artificial abilities then. They relied on guns and the element of surprise. With the abilities... They're much more dangerous. They don't wear anything specific when doing surveillance. But when they hunt, they where these." Roland reached down the side of his armchair, and pulled out a white mask, and held it in front of his face, "While wearing these, it's much harder for abilities to work that rely on eye contact." His eyes flicked to Gabe, then tossed the mask onto a table.

Ina payed little attention to what was being said, even when Roland brought out the mask. The same kind as the one worn by the person that had been following her and Lawrence earlier. She was still engrossed by the shadow, which was now roaming around the ceiling, keeping clear of the areas that were illuminated by the fire. She watched as it moved closer and closer, leaning her head back until she was staring directly up at it. The shadow began uncurling, spreading out and taking clearer shape. It almost looked human. Ina's eyes flickered as sleep threatened to overtake her.

Plunk! She jumped as Roland threw the white mask into the table in front of her, and she opened her eyes. She froze as she was met by a cold white skull-like face protruding from the ceiling, staring back at her with sunken black eyes. It leaned in closer, and a neck and shoulders materialized from the ceiling after it. A long mane of filthy pitch-black hair plummeted down, tickling Ina's petrified face, and leaving dark wet patches were it touched. The thing maintained an unblinking stare, as it continued to draw closer, rand more of its body became visible. The thing was naked, revealing a twisted skeletal torso, with the spine nearly from the cold pale skin. It had long thin arms, with long bony hands and black nails. It looked like a long dead corpse was falling through the ceiling. Only seconds had passed, but it felt like hours, as Ina stared into the emotionless black eyes. Her mouthed opened, and her throat tightened as she prepared to let lose a blood-curdling scream. In the moment of silence, she blinked. It had disappeared. Aaaaaaiiiiiiiiiii!

“If realizing this makes me ‘creepy,’ so be it,”

“No, what makes you creepy is those long silences and wide eyed stares.” He smiled. “But I can’t condone their behaviour, to hunt us. Everyone has a right to a life and freedom, and true justice is standing against evil, regardless of how it ‘improves’ mankind.” Teddy had put the imaginary pipe down.

Lawrence had started jabbering on, but this time evidence prevailed, as he threw a white mask onto the table.

“Well at least we know the face of our enemy now.” Teddy stared at the mask, the cool clay finish chilled his bones, and the shadows flickering from the fire danced in its eyes. The anxiety was almost palpable in the room.

Before he could could comment, something rumbled nearby, and he searched the room. Nothing. The low rumble erupted once more, and this time Teddy looked to Roland.

    “Got any food? I’m starving.”

The frail man had not even finished pointing when the grease monkey dashed into the room of cold steel and clinical hygiene.

    “Ooo, cookies.”

    Ben and Camille: Illusions

"If someone out there wants me, they need only ask. But if they insist on hunting us down like animals, I will behave like an animal. And when that time comes..." She gave Ben an icy look. "...neither cop, nor soldier, nor God Himself, will stand in my way."

Ben held his hands up. "Ease off, Doc. You have every right to defend yourself, as much right to be here as anyone else. I'm not standing in your way. I've killed in the line of duty, in defense of my life and country, don't think I don't know where you're coming from because up to a certain extent, I do."

Camille's breath caught in her chest as she watched Ben's face. For just the briefest of moments she thought she saw his eyes shift color, going from dark blue to silvery grey. It was gone so quickly, she wasn't even sure it was real. It might just have been an illusion cast by the firelight.

Ben noticed her scrutinizing look. "What? Do I have spinach in my teeth?"

She shook her head. "It isn't that. For a moment I thought I saw..." The words trailed off as she caught sight of an incorporeal shadow drifting from corner to corner overhead. It hovered over Ina, dropping down slowly.

    Aaaaaaiiiiiiiiiii!

Ina's yelp drew an echoing squeak from Camille, who just about fell off the couch. Ben's hand shot out and pulled her back up, sending another cloud of dust billowing into the air.

"What the heck was that all about?" He demanded, as she settled back into the cushions.

Bright flags of color flared across her pale cheeks. "I thought I saw something." She replied, feeling utterly foolish. "It was almost like a living shadow with a skeleton's face."

Ben glanced up into the shadowy reaches of the ceiling, but didn't detect anything out of the ordinary, but his instincts were telling him there was something more to this. He turned his attention to Roland. "The mysterious She, I presume?"

    Liriope

At Ina's bonechilling shriek, Liriope sprang to his feet with catlike agility. Quick as anything he cast out a solid purple shield on all sides, one for each direction, and finally placed one on top. Ina, Baley and Liriope were all encapsulated by the see-through cube. When that was done, Liriope said to Ina, "Who? What? Where?" His eyes darted around, seeking whatever had frightened Ina so badly. He looked all around, his eyes a remarkable shade of sea green, but whatever it was had either gone away or it was hiding.

"Ina! Tell us what's wrong, what'd you see", Liriope demanded, placing his hands firmly on her shoulders.

"I thought I saw something." That came from Camille, who looked flushed and bashful. "It was almost like a living shadow with a skeleton's face." Then Ben went, "The mysterious She, I presume?"

"Was it a she?", Liriope asked Ina. "Are you okay?" His own heart was beaitn rapidly in his chest. If anything, Ina sure could scream!

    Eva, steady as ever

"Ease off, Doc. You have every right to defend yourself, as much right to be here as anyone else,” Ben said. “I'm not standing in your way. I've killed in the line of duty, in defense of my life and country,” he added. “Don't think I don't know where you're coming from because up to a certain extent, I do."

The doctor resisted the temptation to laugh. He thought she was talking about self defense? He couldn’t be more wrong. To a soldier, murder was just 'following orders.’ For her, it was something she chose to do; she decided who needed to be gotten rid of and she carried it out. He didn’t know where she was coming from, not in the slightest.

As the man was speaking, Eva noticed a shadowy silhouette descend from the ceiling, like a human spider trickling down from a hidden web. She knew it couldn’t be Gehenna, who was lazily watching them from a dark corner on the opposite end of the room his beady red eyes faintly visible in the shadows behind one of the many couches. It had to be something else. The shadowy figure had a ghastly face, a grotesque form, and brought with it the familiar sensation of an Exceptional ability…

But that sensation was abruptly stomped out as Ina screamed and Liriope’s power flared to life, easily overpowering the faint presence Eva had sensed a moment ago. The shadow retreated as the boy threw up barriers around the room and flew into a panic.

"Was it a she?" Liriope asked Ina. "Are you okay?"

“She’s fine,” Eva said dispassionately, “and even if she weren’t, yelling in her face won’t help. Calm down.” She looked to the ceiling, searching… “Conserve your energy. Who- or whatever it was was only spectating.” Or spying, she thought.

Baley took in a sharp breath as she squinted through Liriope's energy, like peering through a bubble. Easy-going Teddy could convince her all he wanted, she did NOT want this.

"Yeah Liriope, sorry but this is not really helpin'..." Baley pointed a gloved finger at the purple energy encasing the room. "Thanks though." she added quickly.

Baley had been so caught up in her own worries, she didn't even get a look at what Ina was freaked about. By the sound of Ina's scream and Camille's description, she was thankful she hadn't seen it. And she didn't want another opportunity to see it...

"Ya'll know what, maybe we should head out..." Baley said, turning just enough to stare at the others still sitting comfortably. "I mean, we don't want to anger the spectating 'it', 'she', whatever...right? I know I don't."

    Liriope

Almost everyone was telling Liriope that it was nothing to worry about. He gave Eva and Baley a puzzled look. "A mysterious thing pokes through the ceiling and you guys just shrug it off?", Liriope said, shaking his head. "Either you guys watch too many scary movies and you're desensitized, or you're just plain crazy." Like really, why am I the only one who's all jumpy? What if that had been an enemy? "Geez guys, a alien thing comes into the room and you guys just dismiss it? Unbelieveable, just unbelieveable..." Liriope shook his head and flicked his fingers. His shields disentegrate.

With a shaky sigh, he plopped back down on the sofa. His face was pale and his eyes were that faint, watery grey color again. His power was draining him, he'd put a lot of energy in those shields. "Next time somethin' pops in, I should just bat my lashes and ignore it, like you guys", he said sarcastically.

    Eva, the tactician (?)

"A mysterious thing pokes through the ceiling and you guys just shrug it off?" Liriope said, shaking his head. "Either you guys watch too many scary movies and you're desensitized, or you're just plain crazy. Geez guys, a alien thing comes into the room and you guys just dismiss it? Unbelieveable, just unbelieveable..." With a shake of his head and a flick of his fingers, Liriope dismissed his shields and wearily plopped back down on the couch.

"Conserve you energy," Eva said again, unperturbed. "If this thing does prove to be a threat, you'll want to be at your strongest," she added. "Why pour yourself into building defenses to ward off a being you know nothing about? If it can phase through ceilings and walls, do you really think your shields will stop it? Think for a moment, Liriope. Calm your mind, think, and then act. In that order."

He used his powers like an extension of his body, as though it came instinctually. But Eva knew the default resposes hardwired into a person's body weren't always the correct response. Sometimes they had to be overridden and that took a level of willpower she just couldn't see Liriope possessing.

She looked to him with a gaze that was almost compassionate, like a mother observing someone else's child. "Although I don't show it, I do consider you a valuable member of this team," Eva added hesitantly. "Your mastery of your powers is impressive... but you lack discipline and self control. You could be so much more if you were to master yourself, as well as you've mastered your gifts."

"...You could be so much more if you were to master yourself, as well as you've mastered your gifts."

Liriope made a face like he tasted something sour. "Uh...thanks?" He wasn't sure Eva was complimenting him or not, one minute he's all valuable and the next he's "too wild". "Eva, I was just reacting to seeing a strange thing coming in the room. Unlike most of you, who just dismissed it. If it had been an enemy..." He shooked his head wearily. "And what was I supposed to do? I know my shields might not work on that thing, but I had to at least try. I don't know about ya'll, but when I see a threat, I do something about it, not just sit around overthinking stuff." He shrugged. "When it comes down to it, you all did nothing, and I did something. Seems like I was the one who was really thinking."

Why am I even talking about this, anyway? We must be really bored, like seriously, Liriope thought. He rubbed his eyes tiredly and dug a smooshed up Three Musketeers bar out of his back pocket. "Wicked cool", he said with a grin, ripping off the wrapper.

    Camille: Dinner

He rubbed his eyes tiredly and dug a smooshed up Three Musketeers bar out of his back pocket. "Wicked cool", he said with a grin, ripping off the wrapper.

Camille eyed Liriope's decimated treat with a jaundiced look. "Teddy's cookies look safer than that. Maybe if you ask nicely he'll share." Boosting herself up to stand on the seat of the couch she unhooked the now empty platelet packet and her central line. Half a dozen steps brought her to the doorway.

Ben's brow shot up in query. "What are you doing, Cam?"

"Looking for the kitchen." She said. "We have groceries in the car and I'm guessing most of us have missed dinner. I figured we might as well eat, while Lawrence and Roland give us a few more specifics. These guys look like they could use a good meal."

"Meaning I need to make a trip to the car." Ben said, getting to his feet and ambling to the door.

She nodded, heading down the hall and turning left. Rounding a corner, she located the kitchen. Flipping on the light, she braced for the worst. Like the bathroom upstairs, it was a relic of 1968, but it appeared clean and functional.

    Baley

Well, guess nobody cares what I say. Leavin' is not an option then... Baley thought to herself with a sigh. She eyed Liriope's mushy candy bar, but when Camille mentioned the word 'dinner' her mood brightened. Food would take her mind off of the current situation.

Leaving her spot, Baley roamed casually down the hall to peek her head around the kitchen doorway. She took a quick look over at the kitchen. Despite being old, it was nicer than her own with the electronic cooking ware. Cooking with a wood stove was so...lame. She'd never understand why her parents hated the normal way, they hadn't grown up in the 1700s! Thankfully, Fran had taught her the basics of a real stove and microwave during their sleepovers.

"Would ya like any help? I do know some stuff about cooking..." Baley said, smiling. "But if you're like my kitchen hoggin' Ma and don't like help, then I don't mind."

    Shyla

Shyla watched Camille, Ben and Baley leave the room but she didn't follow. Instead she slid off her perch and onto the couch, tucking her legs and leaning on the armrest. She chuckled at the butt-print left in the dust from Ben, before returning her attention to the conversation still going on in the room.
Shyla wasn't sure why Ina had screamed. Apparently there had been a shadow on the ceiling or something. What ever it was it had everyone on edge. Dr. Eva had mentioned she'd been alive for a century. Was that even possible? Was that her ability? That would be awful. To live centuries and not be able to die. No wonder she seemed so...stern all the time. But at the same time, really really smart.

"When it comes down to it, you all did nothing, and I did something. Seems like I was the one who was really thinking."
Shyla rolled her eyes and settled into the couch more. She didn't want to have anything to do with this conversation.

    Camille: Slice of Normal

"Would ya like any help? I do know some stuff about cooking..." Baley said, smiling. "But if you're like my kitchen hoggin' Ma and don't like help, then I don't mind."

"I could use some help," Camille replied, as she washed her hands. "Thanks."

Ben returned carrying the grocery bags, including the two insulated ones containing the perishables. Setting the bags on the table, he cast a glance at Baley. "We can give you a ride home if you need one."

Camille, meanwhile, had unearthed a large skillet and several glass bowls. Setting these on the counter, she delved into the bags, pulling out the required items. Placing the lettuce and tomatoes next to the sink, she said to Baley. "You can have veggie duty if you want it. Wash, shred, and slice." Dairy was deposited in the fridge and the ice cream relegated to the freezer. Camille heaved a brief sight of relief when she found a new bottle of ketchup in the pantry.

Carefully she tested a gas burner, it sparked to life without a struggle. The skillet hit the heat and hamburger hit the skillet. Covering the beef she turned to Baley. "Which do you prefer hard shell or soft shell? We have both."

"Which do you prefer hard shell or soft shell? We have both."

Baley brushed her gloved hands on her jeans as she looked to the veggies. "I prefer soft myself, but I've always been kinda picky..." she said. "Not that my family knows, they think I eat everything. I hate to admit that I'm good at hidin' the truth."

Baley laughed as she flicked on the tap. Taking the head of lettuce between both hands, she held back a grimace as cool water trickled over her gloves. After the lettuce was washed, she turned to the tomatoes, going about the task quickly. Not bothering to look for a towel, Baley wiped her hands again on her jeans.

Onto the next task...finding a knife. She rummaged through a few drawers before she found a selection of them. Carefully she picked up a small cutting knife and headed back to the vegetables. By default, anything sharp went to the bottom of her list of favorite things. Baley decided to hold off on the cutting by peeling the lettuce leaves first.

Turning back to Camille, she smiled as if she were having fun and not inches away from a pointy object. "So...Camille." Baley said. "Ya know about me, but I don't know much about you. Besides your cool water power and all. But, what do ya do in daily life?

    Camille: Routine, Well Sort of...

Turning back to Camille, she smiled as if she were having fun and not inches away from a pointy object. "So...Camille." Baley said. "Ya know about me, but I don't know much about you. Besides your cool water power and all. But, what do ya do in daily life?

Ben picked up on Baley's unease and took over slicing tomatoes. Camille focused her attention on her skillet, stirring together the required items. "There's not a whole lot to tell. I completed my MFA last May and have been working for Mr. Herrings at the Grammar Hammer ever since. I rent the loft above the store from him, so I don't have to worry about commuting. Between Radish and the bookstore, my days are pretty routine. Work, walk, coffee..."

"You still manage to find time to get into trouble." Ben added from the counter beside the sink. "Bandi Preweitt certainly managed to do a number on you."

"Nobody asked for your imput, Hanson." She fired over her shoulder. Returning her attention to Baley, she asked. "So what about you? I know your folks own Happy Hooves, but not much else. Outside of your talent, that is."

Returning her attention to Baley, Camille asked. "So what about you? I know your folks own Happy Hooves, but not much else. Outside of your talent, that is."

Baley gave a grateful smile to Ben and continued to shred the lettuce into strips as she talked. "Yep...Happy Hooves is basically my life. And school. I'm home-schooled." Baley said with a shrug. "No time to go to the public school with my busy schedule. Gotta get up at 5 am to help with the cows, make breakfast, do basic chores, chase my little sisters, help with the garden, milk again, and find time for some fun. In my house, everyday is a big day."

Baley sighed. "My family and I actually moved to Grygla after the same two years I got my power. The tornado really knocked us off our feet. Of course, I got the worst of it. For awhile there, I was kinda useless..."

She put shredded lettuce into a pile as she shook off the memories. No need to keep bringing up the negative. "But enough about me," Baley said, turning to Ben. "I've been wonderin'...how long have you two known each other?"

    Shyla: Kinda Spoiled

"Ugh! I'm bored...and hungry!" Shyla suddenly exclaimed coming into the kitchen. She rested her elbows on the counter and put her chin in her hands as she watched Camille, Ben and Baley cook. She didn't even bother to help. Totally ignorant of the conversation that had been going on she interrupted, "You guys making tacos!? Yum! Mom never makes homemade tacos. We always get the pre-made resturant kind."
