Extra, extra! New member joins the Writing Forums, makes little to no impression! Member replies with "No shocker there"! Heya! Glad to be here folks. I'm just a 15 year old teenager from Southern Ontario who wants to imporve his writing skills. I'm in Grade 10 right now and am planning to go to university in Montreal to get a degree in Atmospheric Sciences. But that doesn't mean I can't do a bit of writing every now and then! My writing skills aren't very impressive at the moment, but I didn't join this place just for kicks. I really want to improve my skills so I can churn out some stuff I actually like. I have some ideas that I like but I'm not sure how to get 'em outta my noggin and onto paper yet. Hopefully I can learn how to here! When I was a kid, I used to write short little stories. I remember always being very excited about a cool idea I had, then writing one or two chapters, and getting bored with it. As I got older I've been writing less as other things take up my time. My ultimate goal is to write a novel someday and maybe even get it published, but I'm not very confident in my abilities at the moment and want to start off with a few short stories at least. Besides writing, I like to sketch, (mostly cartoons and comics) play with my dog, dope around on the Internet, and be lazy. I'm a pretty active member on a forum that focuses on making RPG games as well, and I've tried my hand at making a few games. I want to make a very good game one of these days and I'm working on getting a good concept before I even start programming. Also, I've worked on making good critiques there, so hopefully I can maybe help a few people out here as well. I'm usually very shy in real life but I'm becoming more open all the time. Hope to have a good time here and maybe even learn a thing or two!
Hello Cobaye, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
I wish. It was just somethin' I got of Google. My sketches aren't that great right now, but with practice I hope to improve. Thanks for the welcomes guys!
