On a scale of one to ten, how hard does the following character description and name make you roll your eyes? Taylor has the power to absorb physical items and then turn herself into those items, making her a walking, sapient utility belt. Because of this, she calls herself UtiliTay.
I don't really eye roll that much but once I read that description I internally groaned for a good ten seconds so I'd say a five.
Depends on how it's done I guess—it's pretty much what the T-1000 does really. The name is probably the most cringeworthy part though.
Had me engaged until the title came up. Man...no, please...don't do that. I'm begging you. That name hurts me. Hurts so badly, that I left this thread after seeing it, but was so bothered that I had to come back and say something or I'd find myself irritated by it for the rest of the evening.
About a 6. (1 being not at all and 10 being eyes rolling so bad they get suck in the back of your head).
I'm being forced to go against the stream here. Is it a comic book or similar? Then go for it! I like it in that regard!
It would fit in something like the goofier superhero comics made by DC in the 60's and 70's. I'm thinking Metal Men in particular, but then they weren't human, they were some kind of synthetic beings, so it fits a lot better. If it's a more realistic comic or a novel, fugeddaboudit.
It depends on the audience. If you're writing for young adults and above, I would definitely ditch, "UtiliTay." Depending on what the story, as a whole, is about, I would also consider rewording the sentence. Something like, "Taylor has the power to morph into different inanimate objects around her by absorbing their essence and concentrating her energy into adopting their physical form, essentially making her a living utility belt."
If you acknowledge it and your story has a comedic edge, it's not so bad. "She calls herself Utilitay, which invokes a spectacular chagrin in anyone so unfortunate as to be caught in her company."
Firstly, congratulations on asking one of the oddest questions I've seen on this board. And secondly every aspect of this premise makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry.
No eye-rolling, did get a chuckle out of me. I dunno, I may just have a high tolerance for silliness. I would assume this character is intended for something fairly lighthearted, say a comedic superhero pastiche?
