I love reading fantasy in the young adult section (and outside of that: lord of the rings) and I also like historical fiction and romance (like Nicolas Sparks, not like the erotica novels haha) sometimes, but mostly fantasy!
Definitely fantasy for me, but I also have a soft spot for science-fiction. I am glad to see you didn't lump the two together as so many do!
I mainly like historical and alternate-historical fiction, though older sci-fi and sci-fi fantasy can be awesome too.
I voted for Crime/Thriiller, as my favorite authors are Vince Flynn, Tom Clancy, Agatha Christie, Brad Thor, Stephen Hunter, etc. and I just love a good crime/thriller novel. However, I also enjoy reading Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and just other general works of fiction. Tolkien [his Lord of the Rings, as I'm sure most of you know, were absolutely fabulous], Eoin Colfer [his Artemis Fowl were quite enjoyable], and C.S. Lewis are other favorites of mine.
Sci-fi and Fantasy are a tie for me, but since I couldn't pick two, I picked Sci-fi. I try not to limit myself to any one genre, but the books I tend to like the most usually end up being Sci-fi or Fantasy.
Historical fiction for me is my favorite but I read widely - horror, non-fiction, mainstream, chick lit (if my brain needs a time out), action/adventure and RP books. Basically I read anything and everything, within reason!
I read almost exclusively Science Fiction. Have been fascinated with the genre ever since I was a kid. I also can't (and don't want to) really write anything but scifi.
I definitely prefer fantasy, but not the way corny stuff. Science fiction is also one I really like to read, only if it's reasonable, not the totally unrealistic stuff. What are yours, daniel?
Fantasy for me. I do enjoy a good sci-fi or horror from time to time, but ever since reading Tolkien I've been hooked. This, in turn, has led to an appreciation of real history, mostly Medieval Europe.
I love fantasy, it's what I enjoy reading and writing the most--a nice break from the harsh realities of real life. But on that note, I do enjoy reading non-fiction books, especially historical ones, of just about any topic. I find that reading history, (well written history), helps to enrich my understanding about our world, which in turn adds to more realistic perspectives in my writing. Or so I think.
If I'm looking for a particular genre, it will usually be historical fiction. But these days I rarely go looking for something based on genre. I find it's much more helpful to my writing if I read all sorts of things.
I love general fiction and memoirs. Frank McCourt(R.I.P) is my favorite. I'll miss him. On occasion I'll read books outside the box. I read one recently called 'Lovely Bones' by Alice Sebold which was real interesting and I saw the movie afterward. Other than that it's mostly general fiction for me.
I'd probably have to say Fantasy. I like the way out there, magic, new worlds fantasy and light fantasy, fantasy that takes place in a real place, with some magic or creatures, etc. I like General Fiction, also. Historic is another I like.
Speculative science fiction (as opposed to Science fiction fantasy) - PKD etc.. Classic Horror Lit - Poe, HP Lovecraft and when i'm relaxing rubbish crime dramas like the Scarpetta series.
If i could, i would change mine to Science Fiction now. Discovering Space Opera was the best thing ever.
