Nope, I'm an American and an overweight, no longer active duty US Marine. Expat nearly 20 years now, so my ties aren't as strong as most maybe.
I don't know if he's in a class by himself, but I do know that when that class gets together, it sure don't take long to call the roll. Houston Oilers Coach Bum Phillips on his Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell. I was a kid just beginning to understand sports when the "Love Ya Blue" Oilers became rock stars. Even though I'm a Bengals fan, Bum and Earl will always have a special place in my sports memories.
'First person singular obtaining colloquial orgasm within a Caledonian sandwich,' it said, then looked annoyed, and spoke incoherently into a grille set in its belly, which replied. It looked up and said, 'Sorry. As I was saying: I come in peace.' -Iain M. Banks, Cleaning Up (from the short story collection The State of the Art)
Apparently. Banks was a pretty careful writer. ETA: Apparently "piece" is Glaswegian for "sandwich," so the translation software was hitting a homophone. https://www.scotsman.com/whats-on/arts-and-entertainment/scottish-word-day-piece-1626156
I just googled to find this book. First search result directed me at amazon books. Without even a cover image. Without even a summary. Without a single review. The new paperback (no clue if this even means hardcover or what) is at 135$ and there's also a collectible (no clue why it's that) at 275$. Is it written in the blood of the author? Does it come with a fridge or a genie? ... I'll keep searching. It just surprised me. ETA: Just found the normal one. All good!
No, I found it. It's just unexpected as a first result to fall onto this. I don't know why my first result was so uptown and suspicious.
It's an odd little collection of his earlier works. He was an odd writer, but if you like what you read, hit me up for more recommendations of my favorite and not-so-favorites of his bibliography.
