Another one by Robertson Davies, from his collected speeches and essays—volume entitled The Merry Heart, and the speech entitled 'Literature and Technology': "...after a certain age, innocence is a dangerous quality." I laughed, but I reckon he's right.
The length of a film should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder. - Alfred Hitchcock
I never threw an illegal pitch. The trouble is, once in a while I toss one that ain't never been seen by this generation. - Satchel Paige
“‘Well, you’ll see, Piglet, when you listen. Because this is how it begins. The more it snows, tiddely-pom-’ ‘Tiddely what’ said Piglet. (He took, as you might say, the very words out of your correspondent’s mouth.) ‘Pom,’ said Pooh. ‘I put that to make it more hummy.’ And it is that word ‘hummy’, my darlings, that marks the first place in The House at Pooh Corner at which Tonstant Weader Fwowed up.” Opening of Dorothy Parker's review of The House at Pooh Corner.
Nah, I just assume everyone knows and let those who don't look it up on the sly. That way they can pretend prior knowledge if they wish.
Just looking at the slick, shiny, red surface of a hot dog makes me feel slightly queasy. If the surface is sufficiently disguised by ketchup, hot sauce, and a deep-fried cornmeal coating, I might manage to eat one. Brats, on the other hand, can be quite satisfactory eaten alone, though I do like spicy ketchup.
that’s funny. I usually dislike ketchup by itself; the only time I eat it is on a hot dog. And on a burger with mayo to make fry sauce. Fry sauce is the best condiment for fries and onion rings. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten onion rings with ketchup.
Ketchup, most definitely does belong on breakfast, if by breakfast you mean a fry-up (eggs, bacon, black pudding, mushrooms, tomatoes, fried bread). A fry-up without ketchup is like Laurel without Hardy. Ketchup also goes on bacon butties (some insist it has to be brown sauce for bacon butties but they’re wrong). Ketchup doesn’t belong on chips/fries, or indeed onion rings. For those it has to be mayo.
How different can mayo, on fries and onion rings, be to fry sauce (mayo mixed with ketchup) on fries and onion rings?
