I became acquainted with Mencken's work when I lived in Baltimore, where he is regarded as a sort of patron saint. A strange combination of progressive and conservative, who has his champions and detractors to this day.

Prose wanders around with a lantern and laboriously schedules and verifies the details and particulars of a valley and its frame of crags and peaks, then Poetry comes, and lays bare the landscape with a single splendid flash."

“A book is made from a tree. It is an assemblage of flat, flexible parts (still called "leaves") imprinted with dark pigmented squiggles. One glance at it and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, the author is speaking, clearly and silently, inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people, citizens of distant epochs, who never knew one another. Books break the shackles of time ― proof that humans can work magic.”

    ― Carl Sagan

Angela had more bodies than a Chinese cemetery. Nobody ever seemed to wonder why anytime she went anywhere, somebody got whacked. I wouldn't invite her anywhere.
