    Favorite Quotes?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by lordofhats, Feb 5, 2008.

I searched the forum and was shocked that we didn't have one of these. Everyone has to have favorite quotes right?

    Favorites:

"Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." ~ Emiliano Zapata

"God doesn't play with dice." ~ Albert Einstien

"People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people." ~ V, V for Vendetta (Film)

"Men are basically smart or dumb and lazy or ambitious. The dumb and ambitious ones are dangerous and I get rid of them. The dumb and lazy ones I give mundane duties. The smart ambitious ones I put on my staff. The smart and lazy ones I make my commanders." ~ Erwin Rommel

"Don't fight a battle if you don't gain anything by winning." ~ Geroge S. Patton

"(Talkng about how Magna morphs and the magnetic parts that they feature. Colbert had attached the bear's head to the eagle's body) This allows you to combine our proud symbol of American freedom, with a godless killing machine!! Look at that! Half-bear, half-eagle, it's a beagle! And this is a grizzly, so it's a greagle. Kill it! Kill it! (Panically dismantles the "greagle")." ~ Stephen Colbert, courtosy of Wikiquote

Yeah Valiance. I can't take Reeves seriously after I saw Bill and Ted. The Matrix was ruined for me. I expected Neo to break into air guitar at any moment.

I had to go find this one. I love it.

Awesome metaphor and good bit of brain food.

"It is a puzzling thing. The truth knocks on the door and you say, "Go away, I'm looking for the truth," and so it goes away. Puzzling." - Robert Pirsig

"Traditional scientific method has always been at the very best, 20 - 20 hindsight. It's good for seeing where you've been. It's good for testing the truth of what you think you know, but it can't tell you where you ought to go." - Robert Pirsig

    Erwin Rommel

"Behind the smile there is a knife"
    Sun Tsu

"Dear Mrs., Mr., Miss, or Mr. And Mrs. Daneeka: Words cannot express the deep personal grief I experienced when your husband, son, father, or brother was killed, wounded, or reported missing in action."

There comes a time when it lies within a man's grasp to shape the clay of his life into the sort of thing he wishes to be. Only the weak blame parents, the times, lack of good fortune, or quirks of fate.
    - - - Louis L'Amour

Time rushes towards us with its hospital tray of infinitely varied narcotics, even while it is preparing us for its inevitably fatal operation.
    - - - Tennessee Williams "The Rose Tattoo"

I have a most peaceable disposition. My desires are for a modest hut, a thatched roof, but a good bed, good food, very fresh milk and butter, flowers in front of my window and a few pretty trees by my door. And should the good Lord wish to make me really happy, he will allow me the pleasure of seeing about six or seven of my enemies hanged upon those trees.
    - - - Heinrich Heine

A word is a bud attempting to become a twig. How can one not dream while writing? It is the pen which dreams. The blank page gives the right to dream.
    ~ ~ ~Gaston Bachelard

For your born writer, nothing is so healing as the realization that he has come upon the right word.

Aw, I can't think of any "authentic" quotes off the top of my head, but I can leave this gem from my mother...

"Remind me when we get home to plug up the chicken."

I like your second one, Maia. Reminds me of one I heard somewhere:

"I haven't done anything that most people haven't done. Including you."
"Doesn't make us right, just a whole lot of people wrong."

"Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light; I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night." -- Sarah William

"Yet the gods to not give lightly of the powers they have made,
And with Challenger and Seven, once again the price is paid.
Though a nation watched her falling, yet the world could only cry
As they passed from us to glory, riding fire in the sky."
    - Kristoph Klover, "Fire In The Sky"

"May thy knife chip and shatter!" - a saying from Dune by Frank Herbert

"If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater." - Shepherd Book, "Firefly"

"Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity." - Robert A. Heinlein

"Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come." - Vow of the Night's Watch, "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin

"Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck." "
    - L. Long, one of Robert Heinlein's characters

.... I will point out the perpetual energy crisis and the perpetual ignoring of nuclear power by too many people. Or the way people demonize Three Mile Island - the bloody thing did exactly as it was supposed to do, and the only major damage was to equipment, and the radiation leaked was not a dangerous amount unless you assume that any radiation at all is harmful. Meanwhile, we get wind and solar power foisted on us, at far higher expense per unit of energy...
    And they never catch wise.

Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast, to soften rocks or bend a knotted oak. - William Congreve

Of course I'm outta my mind! It's crazy in there!

It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

"The time has come," the walrus said,
"to talk of many things --
"of sails and ships and sealing wax,
    "of cabbages and kings,
"and why the sea is boiling hot
    "and whether pigs have wings".
