per the pantser thread I don't outline fiction - my first draft however is not a detailed outline, its a story... thereafter it will be edited and tweaked and generally tightened up, but it's not likely to be full rewritten for non fiction I outline using the chapter headings in scrivener - again the first draft is the completed work of filling all those chapters with content prior to them being edited, it still isn't an outline
It's not a detailed outline, to me its the collection of all the text youve written on the assignment to the date. An outline only gives a brief overview (couple of sentences per chapter) on what to expect to read about.
This. This exactly. I don't know yet where I fall on the spectrum of first drafts. Some people write first drafts that are impossible to make sense of by anyone other than the author and others seem to be able to write first drafts that only need polishing. I suspect I am somewhere around here.^
