What would you call a person who moves to one place or country, stays for a few months or so and holds a job, then moves to a different country or place, gets a new job there, etc etc. I've read somewhere about a guy who was frugal with his money and moved from country to country, living in every place he wanted to travel to. And he had a job for as long as he lived there. If he got tired of the job he could quit and move to another country or new atmosphere and find a new job to learn. What would you call a person like this, a nomad, emigrate, something else? What is your opinion of this idea and would you ever consider doing it?
I'm not sure but thats pretty much what I do =/ I return home sometimes to see my family, which is what I'm doing currently for christmas =] I save my money as well so when I am home I can spend like a pro. I like travelling though it gives me a nice boost of inspiration, when I go to america (next year) I'm hoping to get loads of ideas. Excitement isn't even the word
i would say that type of person would be a drifter rather than a gypsy as gypsies can be considered a race of people in some circles especially where I live where we have a large gypsy population so i think drifter is the most appropriate term to describe your character.
nomad gadabout gypsy drifter itinerant globe-trotter world-wanderer all of which probably fit me, since i've been doing that for the past 17 years...i roamed the us and canada for 2 and a half years in an rv, done house and pet-sitting around the world, gone to north and south america on writing gigs, and moved back to the states into a 'home' of my own for the first time in 17 years, only 3 months ago... here's a list of all the places i've been to and lived in, over the past 4 decades [includes my travels during the years before i made myself homeless and possessionless on purpose 17 years ago and became a full-time world-wanderer... sorry for the long post]: Where in the world I’ve been/lived: N. Dang, Mammamaia, that's a huge list of places. I've only been to the following places: England Canada Germany Saudi Arabia Turkey Guam Diego Garcia Azores Spain Hawaii Scotland Mexico Obviously, you've got me beat by a long shot.
i have a hard time believing it myself, bob! when i was in high school and wanted to be a 'stewardess' [as they were called then], so i could travel to europe [to the dismay of the hs counselor who said it would be a waste of my college-level brain!], i couldn't have imagined i'd be gadding all over the globe on my own...
nomad or world-wanderer seems to fit. @ Bob and Mamamaia- OK, I am super jealous! I've only been to Texas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, New York, and DC. I have never been anywhere else in the USA, much less outside the country. I intend to do one day. Explore Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia, etc.
