In the YA fantasy project I'm working on, one of the protagonists is a grandson of a tribal chieftain in the Sahara and his West African slave concubine. Another main character is a dancer in a corrupt local ruler's harem. I've been looking on Amazon.com and found some good-sounding books on the Arab/North African/Turkish trade in sub-Saharan African slaves and on White Christian slaves, but found only one nonfiction book on harem slavery (focusing on a single house and a single group of women's experiences in Turkey.) Does anyone know of any great books on harem life that focus on North Africa, particularly Morocco and Egypt, and on the female slaves?
