    Greetings to All Members

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Brian, Apr 11, 2010.

    Hello,

My name is Brian, and writing has always been a big hobby of mine. I joined this website in the hopes that I would find a place to discuss writing techniques with others, and to share my writing, get feedback, and also to help others when they are in need of help with writing. It is my belief that people can learn from anyone, whether they are better than you or not, at any given task.

I'd like to get to know some of you, because there are a little under 17,000 members on this forum, I'd like to meet some of you now. It would be appreciated if you could reply to this message telling me a little bit about yourself.

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hi Brian!

My name is Cheryl. I've always loved to read, and have dreamed of writing myself. I have only been trying for about a year, but feel already I have come a LONG way. I am a stay at home mom, 3 small kids, and wish I could find more time in a day...

This site is full of wonderful people and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have :)

    Welcome

Hello Brian, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

I'm Dave, one of the moderators of the forum, and my greatest writing interest lies in science fiction.

Please read How to Use the Review Room before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Hi Brian, my name is Andy and I've been a member of this site for around four hours now. By day I am a radio copywriter but by night I like to do some proper writing and even though I have only been on the forum for a few hours I've already found a plethora of useful nuggets and tidbits. It seems like the place to be.

Thank you all for your introductions. Cogito- thank you for that information, although I know that my writing will most likely never be good enough for a publisher (I know that this is the wrong attitude to have, but I suppose I may as well face a simple truth, I am extremely amateur). I will start my entries for the competitions now.

    Hi Brian.

I only joined 2 days ago so if you want to know about me, why not visit my intro instead of me re-typing the information? The same with other new people.

However, I don't want to appear lazy so...

My name is Suzanne and I am soon to be another year older. :) A good thing, not a bad given that I am still young! I love cats (I live with six), anime and books in the horror genre. I value my friends and family but sometimes feel alone in my joy of reading and writing.

    Nice to meet you. :)
