    Slam Poetry

I remember it as being rather popular in the early 90's. It was a very Cosby - Different World thing to do. :D

Yeah. We had to do poetry slams in my English class just a few weeks ago. I'm not very good at lyrics/poetry, so needless to say mine sucked and of course nobody else took their's seriously.

A poetry Slam is just a poetry contest where you get up and recite your stuff and the audience, judges, or selected members of the audience vote on whose is best.

Of slam poetry, a favorite of mine is OHM by Saul Williams.

We did a slam poetry thing in one of the education classes I took my last semester of college. It was fun listening to everyone else, but when it came time for me to go, I thought I was going to throw up all over the front row. I'm not a fan of getting up in front of a room full of people I don't know very well and reading something I've written.

I adore slam poetry. It's basically just spoken word, but the emphasis is not only on the words but the delivery as well.

For any fans, like me, there's an Elephant Engine High Dive Revival beginning this September and will travel through the United States. Including "Anis Mojgani (2-time Individual National Poetry Slam Champion), Derrick Brown (invited to open for The Whites Stripes, Cold War Kids), Buddy Wakefield (2-time Individual World Poetry Slam Champion), Shira Erlichman (Pushcart Prize Nominee; mesmerizing 1-woman band) and 10 nationally recognized rotating 5th members." (From the tour's MySpace page.)

    I'll be there. :)

According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy. - Jerry Seinfeld
