    Having trouble continuing my story

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by PStar, Sep 14, 2020.

I have three main characters: Blitzkraig, Bloojai & Brimstone. They’re brothers but don’t know it yet, having lived without each other the first 10 years of their lives.

Blitz is confident, arrogant & prideful, but is inwardly questioning himself for being born due to the “sins” of his father.

Bloo is naive, yet determined. He does what he’s told & is very Lonely. He wants to earn Blitz & Brim’s respect more than anything.

Brim is frank, boisterous & fun loving. He’s smart & lecherous, yet cares only for the simple things in life.

Blitz wants to start a gang, & Bloo advances him about joining. But he gets turned down. Brim also doesn’t wanna join the gang, but during an arc, they must band together to save themselves from a powerful robot Hero named Turbo. But I’m wondering how exactly how to continue further into my plot. Currently Blitz doesn’t want anything to do with Bloo. But I want there to be a point where eventually Blitz feels bad that Bloo has nobody & connects with him, allowing him to join him. Any tips on how I can structure the plot?

It's something you have to figure out yourself. No one can tell you how to write a story.

Start perhaps at the end, and then work your way back from there. Or make a list of various things that could happen -- no matter how ridiculous -- and choose the one that appeals to you the most. Writing down this list will help you get the weak ideas out of your brain and allow you to produce new, better ones.

Finishing stories can be one of the most difficult tasks, there are some that spend years on the same book and never actuly finis it . It is also the one of the most important . I have no idea how you can finish yours . There is a lot of different approaches to writing , I am assuming you have not outlines your story
and you are working on the first draft . I would suggest, you don't think too much about it , and press on . Continuity , structure , character development or anything that you can think of . All the problems can be thought about when you write the second draft .

I am outlining the story. I’m actually on the first draft of the outline for this specific arc.

Just a quick thought (unrelated to the plot.) Your three characters have similar names (certainly when reduced to their nicknames, Blitz, Bloo and Brim. That might not be easy for a reader to keep them straight when reading the story. The names kind of roll off the tongue when you're speaking about them (and I assume your avatar is those guys?) but this kind of thing doesn't translate well to written narrative. You MIGHT want to think about giving them more distinctive (as in distinctive between the three of them) nicknames. Starting each one with a different letter, maybe? And varying the length as well? Like Kraig, Jai and Brimmer, for example?

I have never been able to outline stories . I just struggle with the first draft , and that becomes an outline .

Assuming the three characters have a common goal, maybe each can have specialist knowledge or skills that are necessary to implement a plan. That would bind them together more as a team.

It doesn't sound like you have a plot at the moment. Instead you have a bunch of characters, but other than forming a gang, what do they want to do? Perhaps Turbo could lurk in the background as a threat, and the three need to band together to confront him.

Blitz wants to prove to the world that he should’ve been born. He suffers from existential crisis & because of that he wants the world to accept him. Bloo wants the respect of Blitz & Brim, who he values. He doesn’t want to be lonely anymore & just wants to be accepted. Brim has simple desires, but above all else wants to be hailed as the strongest ever. Eventually after they band together they plot to take over the world by beating up all the powerful Heroes & Villains there is.

Side note: This Earth is different from our own, hailing as the greatest planet of the Universe where the most powerful species gather from all around the galaxies.

You're not alone. I still haven't figured out my writing method yet and I've tried quite a few different approaches but none of them have given me any results - every time I plan I get bored of the idea by the times it gets to writing the first word. I feel like I've all ready written it. So this time I'm going off planning and just write and see if that gets me results. It's all about trying different things and see what gets results. No one can tell you how because we're all different. There are tons of ready made structures available on the internet. Just hot google.

What jumps out to me about your sum-up is I don't see why Blitz denies Bloo. You say he doesn't want anything to do with the guy, but why?

If he wants to form a team and Bloo is the first (potentially only) person to approach him... it just strikes me as odd. Is there a reason why he'd choose to deny Bloo at the cost of his dream of forming this team?

The specifics of that reason will likely come into play when it comes time for him to change his mind.

Yeah, the reason is that Bloo’s an idiot.

What I wanna strive for is for Blitz to accept Bloo after finding out he has nobody else, & that they’re of the same boat. Then Brim joins after seeing what a riot the two are.

Maybe it’s because I’m not a fan of fantasy - if that’s what you’re writing - but you talk about your characters as though they‘re out of your control, almost like characters in a RPG computer game. Not sure if that’s relevant or why you’re struggling, but these are not real people beyond your control. You’re the puppet master and you make them do whatever is necessary to make the story work.

I immediately thought of these guys:

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night
sailed off in a wooden shoe —
Sailed on a river of crystal light,
    into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
the old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring fish
    that live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!"
    said Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.

I try to let the character develop as I’m writing. I have tried to plan by outlining each chapter with dates and times and some event. After a while I found myself falling into the formulas for fiction. Not to say the tension and character arc is bad, but the story was missing something and I couldn’t finish it.

Only time I could not continue a story was when I was writing a horror story and got so scared...……… well maybe someday I will finish that one!
