I have been on a long hiatus from writing and looking to get back to it. I have been published but not paid (I had a letter published in the Tampa Tribune and wrote a series of fishing articles for a website as well.) I like to write mostly sci-fi but branch out into historical fiction and admittedly a few of my works would be hard to classify. I have novel ideas, short stories, screenplays, and even a few comic book ideas running right now. And a book on how to make wooden fishing lures. And because I am sure there are a few people out there wondering about my username this should help my real name is James Arness. Matt Dillon. Gunsmoke. Western TV show from the 60's for all you younger folks. Before my time even but I (and my wife) still get teased about it so after avoiding it for a while we just jumped right in. Oh and I just finished my first novel, this post.
Hello James, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Well, at least your name isn't Ken Curtis, you'd have to take the username Festus! Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Thanks for the Welcome everyone Garmar69, I say "younger folk" but I am part of the younger folk myself having only seen it in re-runs. I have a pretty odd sense of humor, and a lot of my writing is "humorous sci-fi", although i do branch out into other areas such as historical fiction and even dark. I don't know how much screenplay writing is done here but I will be putting some up for review if possible. Just a bit more about myself I am located in St. Petersburg, Florida and have lived here all 40 years. I like fishing, anything sci-fi (esp. the new Battlestar Galactica), cooking, and even making my own wooden lures. Oh and writing on occasion. Well, I am as yet to fully explore this wonderful site and so I'm off! As for the warped sense of humor Two Nuns walked into a bar... the third one ducked. Think about it.....
