Well I want to start off by saying hi. I'm Jacob and I live in Chicago. I'm new to writing and I was looking for a place to help me learn and enhance my skills. I haven't read as many books as a lot of you likely have but my favorite writers are Max Brooks, Tom Clancy, and J.R.R. Tolkien. My favorite book is either I Am Legend or The Hobbit. The few stories I have written are either military involved or light fantasy. Although I do enjoy post-apocalyptic type stories. So if you have any advice, please PM me or leave me a message on my profile.
Welcome welcome! I am a huge Tolkien fan myself and always enjoy reading any of his writings. Can't wait to see what you have
Hey! Welcome to the forums. I haven't read the book I Am Legend, but I heard it was really good. I really should remember to pick it up next time I'm near a Barnes & Noble.
Hello Jacob, Welcome to the Writing Forums. It's funny, everyone either seemes to love Tolkien's work, or hate it withe equal passion. I myself read the Lord of the Rings over thirty times before I lost count, so you may be able to guess which camp I'm in--and I don't really care much for the fantasy genre in general. Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
jacob, FROM CHICAGO! Hello there, darlin. I'm a fellow Chicagoan myself. Can't wait to read your work. =]
Welcome to the forums, Jacob. I'm sure you will enjoy it. A lot of great people are here, all with the same goal, to write better. Hope to see you around.
