    Hello

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by hysteria, Oct 31, 2008.

    Hi Everyone.

My name is Jono and I am from Australia. I work as a Public Servant in Govornment. Always been interested in writing. I haven't written much as yet and I know I need a lot of improvement so I am hoping to get some help. I have read a fair amount of peoples works on this site and it looks like there are some talented writers. I especially liked the best advice thread! Usefull stuff there. :)
Looking forward to reading more and responding to all your stuff and posting some of my works.. Hopefully you can help me improve.

    Other interests...
I am into IT. (Ive been playing "Portal Prelude" recently! I recommend the original "Portal" highly)
I enjoy reading sci-fi (one of my fav most recent books I have read is "House of Suns" -Alastair Reynolds. It's very very good!)
I do photography as well just for me. If you want to check out my photos.. they are here: http://hysteria.gfxartist.com/artworks

Well Thanks for listening. Looking forward to reading your works on the Forums! :)

    Hiya Jono!

I have a friend in the Brissy area. She keeps teasing me how warm it is over there!

Um, I didn't know that playing a computer game counted as IT, but I guess you learn something new every day :p

LOL, OK, OK It doesn't. I really am into IT.. really... You believe me, don't you?
Hehehe, I dabble in Digital art, Photo editing, Websites, and repairs.. the Technical stuff. I used to be a gamer but don't play much anymore. It's just a game I recently played that is different to the usual Mindless stuff out there. It requires you to think. and think differently! :)
Yes it is getting warm here in Brizzy! soon to be stupidly humid in summer, but for the moment it's good!

    I believe you ;)

I dabble in websites and graphics as well, though nothing overly spectacular ('graphics' translates as icons and desktop wallpapers).

As to the weather, just shut up! It's freezing in the UK, with snow and everything.

Have you ever read Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard? It's a thousand page monster of a sci-fi novel. Worth every page IMHO.

    Welcome to the forum Jono.

G'day Jono, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
