Hey, wuzzup? I'm Keith, and I'd like to say that I'm an aspiring writer. People who know me and who have read my work say I have potential, and am a little more advanced than green, so, with it being an interest of mine, I'm strongly considering pursuing it as maybe a profession someday. I mean, I love the whole imagination aspect, the fact that one can actually control the universe through what they write and what they envision. Reality is overrated to me sometimes. Other times, it dominates my every movement, and I'm not too keen on that. lol. I'm very much a control freak, and I don't like being dominated by the reality of this bleak and devolving world. I want to create an escape. As E.L. Doctorow once said, "Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia." I'm 20 years old, and have recently undergone a self-renovation. Was a big hefty felluh throughout high school weighing in at a whopping 408 pounds, and in just 8 months, I've dropped down to 252 pounds after an eye opening meeting with mortality itself. I realized, health was more important than feeding the inner glutton and assuaging my feelings, so I decided to shove it all to the wayside to do whatever it takes to get to an optimal state of health. Still traveling that rough road, but I have a feeling I'll get there in time. I used to read all the time. I was homeless for about 6 months in my teens, and while living in a shelter, we had a library right around the corner, so with no TV, I was there all the time, reading there, and bringing books "home," that I would sit and read through hours on end. I think it's one of the things I appreciated about the downing situation, because since I've gained my freedom back, I have done less and less reading, and I'm in contention with that. For someone who wants to write, not having the attention span to focus on great literature really REALLY hurts that. It starves my creative spirit because I have nothing to feed it. I'm a big Criminal Minds fan, and have taken up reading FanFiction on the show, in particular fiction that revolves around my favorite character from the series, Derek Morgan (portrayed by Shemar Moore.) I try to stick with oneshots and such when I'm reading, because I'm still trying to whip my attention span into shape, so I can once again enjoy a longer more drawn out tale. I prefer a suspenseful or action packed plot. I've never been a real romance person. Maybe it's a guy thing, I dunno. lol. I'm in the process of writing one of my own, but I find I'm struggling since I've grown out of reading. I'm hoping maybe by meeting some new people here and getting some motivation, that I can whip my mind back into shape, and maybe become a writing prodigy. (lol, I wish. haha!) Looking forward to meeting you all, and I hope to love it here in the Creative Writing Forums! =D
Hello Keith, Welcome to the Creative Writing Forums. Please read How to Use the Writing Workshop before you try to post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here anyway. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Writing Workshop, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Writing Workshop, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. We also impose a two-week waiting period before you may post writing for critique, to give you time to become familiar with what is expected and how the site operates. The Writing Workshop forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Writing Workshop forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Well, with FanFiction, I already have no chance of selling it for publication and that's mainly what I write. haha. Thanks for the tips, and I can't wait to get to know some of you guys a little better.
Hello!! Welcome to the Writing Forums! Hope you enjoy your stay By the way, If you happen to ever write fanfiction of criminal minds, I would love to read it. Awesome show.
I've got three chapters of one up on FanFiction.net under this pen name. I'm looking forward to posting it and future fics as well, but I gotta learn how things work around here first. lol.
