hey i'm new here so i guess i should tell you a little about myself. My name is Nicky but of course my username is CommieKing, and that's really a joke as well as an inside reference between me and one of my friends, and i am 19 and from glasgow. Creative writing is something i've always enjoyed, it was the one thing i would look forward to in english at school, even at primary i loved it when we done "stories". I took up writing lyrics about 6-7 years ago but didn't start any real creative writing in my spare time until about 4 years ago when i started my first attempt at a novel. I managed to finish that within 7 months (going on and off it quite a bit), but as soon as i finished it and looked back at it i hated it, i didn't, and still don't believe it was very good, since then i have yet to truly finish anything. I find myself seemingly constantly stopping and starting, begining on one idea but then coming up with another and casting aside the previous one altogether, i think by joining a site like this i can properly motivate myself to continue through with an idea, and certainly there are a couple that i am either working on currently or are planning to get started on soon. It will also be a good opportunity for me to improve my writing, as well as seeing the work of others and looking at their styles, contrasting and comparing, maybe picking up some things here and there. It would also be cool if the opportunity arose to find a writing partner, it's something i have always thought would be interesting, to write something with someone else, to collaborate and exchange ideas, i have in the past attempted to get a sketch show project off the ground with one of my friends, but a lack of resources stopped us and i was the only one doing any writing and contributing any sound ideas, but admittedly my friend is not a writer, it's not something he enjoys, and he preffered to just try and improvise it and work without a script. Anyway i hope enjoy my stay here, and i hope you enjoy having me here.
Hello Nicky, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
