Hi, I'm TheMidnightOwl, but you may call me Tak if you like. I'm new here, just got my account, and as such have NO idea how to work this site. If you could help me out with how to post and whatnot, I'd really appreciate it. Commenting I luckily have down though I joined because I'm a very passionate writer and am tired of getting zero reviews on Fictionpress.com, tired of only having the same 5 people comment on Deviantart.com, and tired of no one stepping up and telling me what they didn't like or what needs work. While i love Fiction Press and dA, I'm really looking for positive AND negative reviews so my writing can expand and improve.
Hello there! Are you that blooming owl that's been sitting outside my window and hooting all night for the last week? You'd better not be. This place seems pretty good for feedback to me - first place I've been where I don't feel like THE most detailed critiquer.
Heh no don't worry that's not me... that's my cousin XD Yeah I understand. I can leave some pretty long reviews on other sites but here I feel like I'm right at home. A minimalist sometimes
Well, can you let him know he has to shut up? kthxbai. This site makes me stretch my reviewing muscles, anyway... I don't feel guilty with a wall-of-text reply here.
Sure I'll let him know. Whether or not he listens is beyond my control If you know how, could you maybe tell me how to add chapters to a thread? I've seen a few up with more than one chapter and I can't figure out how
Nice to meet you too I just have a quick question for everyone, because this is really starting to confuse me. What I'm trying to post has multiple chapters. Would I have to post them as their own separate threads or can I connect the chapters? If I have to put them as one long piece that might be challenging because each one is 2,000-3,000+ words long
Generally people don't seem to post whole novels here - just something about publishing ease or something. If you aren't going to publish something then fair enough if you want to post it all. I've only posted scenes here and there from throughout my novels where I felt they needed the most critique. Also 'cause then if someone does look it up then it'll be pretty obvious I changed the scene enough that it hardly counts.
Hello Owl, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Please read How to Use the Review Room before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Owl, I kinda think you should think about posting lots of stuff here. From what I have read, and what others have said, if you put anything here, it counts as being published, and a real publisher won't want to touch it. If it's your first work, the publisher might not want to deal with you when there is another person with real unpublished stuff.
Hello Tak and welcome! Well, I think you've come to the right place. There is a lot to do here: contests, games, book discussions, and simple conversation. Hope you have fun and see you around!
It seems I've misunderstood this site. A friend suggested it to me so I gave it a shot but she did not explain what it was and the FAQ section did not help me much either ^^; I'm only considering publishing at the moment, not entirely sure if I want to. Only problem is I don't know how to delete my account now
