Hi guys. I'm a poetry writer looking to get some of my work published but also to improve my skills. I want to expand my scope so to speak. It's always been a dream of mine to write a full novel. I think i could do that after i graduate from high school though lol.
Hello Truth, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Hey Truth, welcome to Writingforums! This is the best place on the internet to improve your writing... I would say especially for a highschooler, btw I'm a sophomore . I want to write a novel as well, my problem is mostly that I don't have the patience to. I come up with new ideas too quickly, and then the old one becomes boring. Also, I was taught early on to write tersely, which dramatically cut back on what I ended up with. The problem was, I was cutting too much. It's something I can't seem to shake. So anyways, I write short stories. Everything I've written so far is 5-6 pages or less. I've even got a couple 2-paragraph stories. Anyways... Read Cogs post above me... critiquing others really improves your own skills. Also, I would say for you short stories is a logical first step in getting into writing a novel. It's sorta the same thing only... well, shorter. When you write something, please feel free to take me up on the offer in my sig, or pm me with any other questions you may have Good luck, Nate
Welcome Truth! This place is an amazing place to learn and expand your craft, while helping others on their journey. If you take the time and effort to review other people's work, you will always find them willing to do the same for you. I'm also working on a novel at the moment, and it's tough! It involves a lot of time and energy, but the feeling of accomplishment is amazing. Hope to see you around sometime
