I'm a casual hockey fan these days, and I don't want to dredge something up from my past in case it's no longer relevant. I have two characters watching a hockey game together (NHL, Toronto at Montreal). One of the characters is a player's girlfriend, the other is an older woman who has never mentioned an interest in hockey. I want the older woman to say something (preferably about the girlfriend's boyfriend) that shows that the older woman is a secret hockey fan. So far I've got: I wandered over to find a seat and watch the game and Mrs. McMann smiled from her own spot by the big sheet of glass. “Your young man is doing very well,” she told me. "BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH..." I'm hoping for something more compelling than BLAH BLAH BLAH. The boyfriend is a centre, although he may be playing wing in this game. Some variety of forward.
Not much of a hockey fan but all I can think of is something like, "although I think trading for Fedorenko elevated the whole team. Nobody understands the value of a good defenseman."
"He's been setting up screen after screen and you just missed him undress the D with a spin and a slick toe drag. I didn't think the goalie was going to get his stick high enough in time!"
