How did you come up with your user name?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by SeverinR, Feb 16, 2011.

I have heard this on other forums, so I figured it might be interesting to read here.

How did you come up with your user name, Is it your pen name?

    Mine is my Pen name.
(I did post some of this somewhere in the forums.)

I was in the SCA equestrain group.(sort of a Renn group except we don't put on a show, we just camp the life)
My persona is a German 1320 era, his name is Severin, family name, Rhienfelser (works in the Rhine reigion)

I try to use experiences from the SCA in my writing.

An incredibly long and convoluted process... Suffice to say that I go by the name Melly even though it isn't my real name (the story of how I ended up being called Melisendé is too long to bother typing), but a nickname loving friend made it even more awesome by changing it to Melzaar, and of course, I'm awesome. :p

(Actually, I've always wanted to write a comic in a cute cartoony style about an evil but hapless witch by the name of Melzaar the Almighty, but never have come up with a decent plot, or, indeed, art style :p)

Stole it from the last name of my favourite character from my favourite book.:D Evidence of how bad I am at original names.

Cool. I'm also in the SCA, but still working on the persona (I like making Norman clothing, so I might use that as basis for it).

My username doesn't need much explaining...I'm heavily into fantasy and like dragons.

Well I was signing up for the scifi forums and I couldn't think of any names. I thought of using one of my characters from my novels I am/was working on(Mazrath or was it Tazry?) but I wanted something different. So I typed in a bunch of random things and then for some reason I typed in Unit7.

That account was long lost but since then I have been using the name Unit7. Its odd, for the most part I dislike using numbers in my usernames. But Unit7 sounded cool.

So now just about everything I sign up for has been Unit7. In the case of someone else already using that name I usually stick have Unit7x or some other odd letter before or after it.

So when I came to sign up for these forums the only name that really came to mind was Unit7.

Once opon a time, a long time ago, there was no girls on the internet. Or at least, no girl who wasn't on a picture.

But... In one of the dark corners of the internet known as Quakenet. There actually was a girl. Undercover. Hiding behind the most androgynous name she could find.

And that the story behind w176. I had the nick for over 10 years now.

I even got nicknames based on it. W being the most harmless. And Vitsex = White sex, being the most common one, because it is what you might get if you try to read it at 1337, in Swedish.

I spent 4 years in Guam, while I was in the Coast Guard. I'm an American, hence the yankee portion. Put it together and you have guamyankee.

On a side note, I do NOT like the New York Yankees.

It's a character from a play I wrote with my brother when we were kids. He had a fork in his head.

During the long battle that is learning to write, I occasionally thought, 'this is too much. How do people do this?' etc etc. We've all been there.

A quote from Heinlein fell into my lap and put a lot of things into perspective:

"You should never try to teach a chicken how to dance. Not only will it be a waste of your time but it will annoy the chicken." RAH.
    (Apologies for any paraphrasing errors.)

Make of it what you will but it helped me turn a corner. Thus, Chickendancer.

I feel like this thread has been done before, but whatever. Sid Vicious was the bassist for the Sex Pistols.

I'd have to agree with that sentiment. If I was joining now, I'd use my actual name. As it is, I don't think I make any secret of my identity.

To be honest, I think I just chose my username because it sounded cool. No deep and meaningful story behind it.

My real name is Lydia. I'm pretty sure people won't come and kill me because I write my real name, so yeah.
