How do you open your novel?

    A sound approach, IMHO.

    When I was writing screenplays, the rule of thumb for openings was to show the MC going about her/his daily life (hopefully, an interesting part of it, not washing dishes or changing the sheets... unless that's so relevant it can't be ignored) before the inciting incident dragged him/her into the story proper.
