In a sentence how do you write thoughts? John licked his lips. "That was a nice piece of cake," he thought. John licked his lips that was a nice piece of cake he thought. Or is it something completely different?
Here is an entire thread where we discussed this not a few days ago. https://www.writingforums.org/showthread.php?t=25947
John licked his lips. That was a nice piece of cake, he thought. Thoughts are traditionally incorporated into the narrative.
I believe this was disscused in depth some time ago. So anyways, I usually write: John licked his lips. That was a nice piece of cake, he thought. Though as far as I think, both of that way could actually work. But I don't really see the need for empishasing he's thoughts. I mean it's his point of view.
there are many threads on this subject... it's a toss-up whether writing thoughts, or using semi-colons holds the record for number of times one is started on the topic...
It's even addressed min my blog entry, He said, she said - Mechanics of Dialogue, the link to which is prominent in my signature.
slightly off topic, but not really... is there a keyword search function on here? I've not seen one. If there isn't, could one work on the site?
Umm yes. It's part of the search dialogue from the menu strip near the top of the page, and also part of the Search This Thread Advanced Search.
