In a nutshell, It's set in a medieval war and the King makes a deal with another dynasty that if he dies without any heirs then his kingdom will be ruled by the dynasty, then the Kings rides out to fight the Ottomans with his army. The cardinal traces the family tree and finds out that there is a heir to the throne and she is working in a castle as a maid. A young woman called Orsoyla is working away when the cardinals men take her and her family to the capital. They hear news of the kings death and the dynasty claims the kingdom as theirs as does another in Transylvania. But the cardinal and Princess Orsoyla fight for her crown rallying her people to her... After a war of succession the dynasty makes a deal with the Ottomans that if Princess Orsoyla is gotten rid of then peace will happen. With both the dynasty and Ottomans invading her country and with no chance of saving her people from death or slavery if she fights, she decides to make a deal under God to surrender to the dynasty in return for them taking over the crown and protecting her lands from the Ottomans. It ends with the country being saved from the Ottomans and continuing as a non-Independent country with its people living on but Princess Orsoyla is sold/given to the Ottomans along with some land to ensure peace.
It doesn't really sound like a short story to me. In the sense that it seems to be spanning for a longer time and have a plot that reminds of a novel, just shorter.
