Hi, I have a question regarding the rep point system. I guess you could say I give it out a lot -- I like to be generous and give people points whenever they reply to my question, critique my work, or give anyone advice that stands out as being exceptional (i.e. if they obviously spent a lot of time on it). I realize rep isn't that big of a deal, but I still like to be nice and give people kudos when I think they deserve it, you know? Anyways, a lot of the time I get the message "You've given out too much rep in the last 24 hours, try again later." What's the limit on how much rep you can give, and does it make a difference how many posts you have, etc? Thanks!
ooh yes I would like a figure on how much rep you have to spread around before giving it to the same person twice ? Like Mallory I like to give it to people who help me - I keep forgetting these days because of the too much rep or needing to spread it round.
Hey, Mal. There is a limit, but I am not sure what that limit is and if there is more than one variable, like, how many points, or how many individual times....
Thanks!! I tried to give you some just now, but...the 24-hour message jumped out and whacked me in the face.
Thank you, Maia! You gave me 27 of them to be exact. You've got lots of power I guess haha. You rock, thanks.
Sorry to ask. If I give someone reputation points, let's say I have 26 of them, will that be subtracted by one to 25?
You don't lose Rep points by giving them out. The only way you could lose rep points was if someone bad repped you, but that feature was disabled for good a while ago.
The light green ones make them easier to count. Besides, after every five blocks the next ones take more rep points. The first five are 100 rep points each, the next five are 200 each, and it keeps increasing.
I feel a little dull right here. Just found out how to give rep.... Yay rep. That means more rep for you in the future
The last time I maxed out my rep giving capabilities, it was after repping ten people. But I don't know how it differs based on your rep-giving powers.
Ten rep points, or ten rep grants? I would suspect the latter, or some of us would only be able to rep once daily.
He must mean grants, because people like mammamaia can give out 20+ reps in one grant, so the 10-point limit would be impossible.
With all due respect, can I ask why there is such a limitation? What if more than 10 people are helpful within 24 hours? When I post something for review I usually get around 5 replies within the first few hours, and that's half my rep giving ration for the day right there. When I post a question in a forum such as General Writing or Plot Creation, I generally get about 10 replies in the first hour. I like to give rep to everyone who helps me, but the limit kind of stifles it a bit. I realize there are a few people who will just go around giving it to whoever or giving it to their friends' posts even when unhelpful, but I'm sure very few if any people do that...and, if they do, does it really hurt anyone? Isn't it the free will of the rep-giver? I'm not trying to be argumentative or pick a bone about the trivial issue of rep points on a message board. I'm just wondering why the rule's there.
The main reason for the limits is to keep rep-giving from becoming a competitive sport. Seems stupid, but there are people who will turn anything into a game, ruining it for everyone else.
^ That's true too. Although I think it's less of an issue now that negative rep has been removed. I think there should be a limit because rep can add some value to the site if used correctly. It can show which members are respected and add value to the site. I do think ten rep grants is a little low, but there should be a cap. I raised it to 20. I 20 is still not enough for someone, considering giving rep only to the posts that deserve it the most.
