Write. Start the novel where you think it should start. Probably not a 'day in the life' type of opening, but if that's what you have, go with it. By the time you finish the novel, you'll have a better grasp on the overall story to be told, and you'll be able to adjust the beginning, improving it. Maybe make notes to yourself on ideas about modifying the beginning, so that when that first draft is finished, you have something to work from. Remember, the first draft will be edited and revised multiple times, but if you never finish the first draft, you can't move forward.
