I have a new idea I really like, but I'm not sure where exactly it's going...

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by like*mother~like*daughter, Oct 25, 2014.

So basically I have this idea where a teenage girl, about 16, (nameless as of yet) slowly starts noticing changes with herself (both physically and mentally) that make no sense. Slowly it dawns on her that she's turning into a (mostly stereotypical) vampire. Then somehow she ends up with a bunch of other vampires, who are desperately trying to find a way to become mortal humans again, but of course there's a group who enjoy being vampires and are looked down on.

Something to that effect anyway, I was hoping I could get some ideas/suggestions?

I'm no expert, but I don't think the vampire myth has people just turning into vampires out of the blue. Don't they need to be bitten by another vampire or something like that?

I seen this happen on an old t.v. show The Kindred - it was rather interesting. They were using the idea of turning a female into a vampire against her will as something akin to a rape. The young woman wakes up doesn't know where she is, feels violated, and changed after her date. And another movie Near Dark that treated vampires like it was a curable blood disease.

The way I usually explore a vague idea is to start to fill in the blanks - what the characters do or enjoy doing, what's their goal, the setting, the time period - futuristic or present day, what kind of tone do I want to establish - suspense, drama, literary, unusual, angst etc. This usually gives me loads of ideas. And even by examining two vampire movies of the 80's you can see that simple things like setting can really change the story -
The Lost Boys - Santa Carla L.A., A sunken hotel in a beach cliff, a typical house.
Near Dark - Farming community, Bars, taped up van.

Yes, but I don't want to be super generic or whatever, I want to put my own twist on it but use some of the stereotypes, instead of this glittering in the sun crap.

I don't get what you're looking for. Ideas/suggestions for what?

If you want to bounce ideas off, you need to suggest some ideas for us to comment upon. Otherwise you're asking us to come up with the idea for you lol.

My first question to you would be: what's the purpose/role of vampires in your book? Because my first impression was your book/theme seems to be not dissimilar to the average teen peer pressure and cliques that happen in real life without the need for any supernatural stuff. You could write the same story without the vampire element. So what exactly does the vampire aspect do? How does it add to your story somehow that you cannot possibly have without using this vampire element?

My second question: what do these groups want? What stands in their way? What's the dynamic between the pro and anti-vampire groups, as well as regular humans, and how does this come into play regarding the plot?

My third question: is there a way to reverse the MC's vampirism? If yes, then what is it and how does it work? I think you should know this in advance, because that's where the book is ultimately heading if the MC's goal is to become human again. You need to know if it's even possible before you start writing and, if yes, how does it work. Otherwise your book will meander and collapse, because your MC will have zero direction because you wouldn't have a clue what your MC has to do to get where she wants.

I like the idea she doesn't know she's a vampire. Maybe that's where her change in mind and body take her - to discover how this happened? Why was she made into a vampire? Maybe someone's been building a colony for some big event....?

Mosquitos. They bite people. Suppose one bit a vampire and then bit a human, what would happen?
