This is not your father's comic universe. First an Arab female superhero, then a female Thor, and now Iceman has come out as gay. Are all these changes that veer from the past good for the industry or is it just a publicity stunt for a short term gain? Thoughts? https://gma.yahoo.com/x-men-icon-iceman-comes-gay-183457516--abc-news-celebrities.html
I have no problem with a gay Iceman. That's cool. I don't like the female Thor idea, though. Don't get me wrong - I have no problem with a woman who has the power of Thor. It's just that, the way they've presented the idea, the original male Thor became unworthy of his power, so Odin's enchantment took it from him and transferred it to this woman. It doesn't bother me that it was transferred to a woman. What bothers me is that I was a Thor fan back in the 70s, and to suddenly find that a hero I admired turned out to be unworthy is a stab in the neck. I feel like Marvel betrayed me, in a way. Of course, as a writer, I know that characters go through arcs and those arcs aren't always positive. Sometimes a good guy becomes a bad guy. But in this case, it doesn't sit well with me.
Of course. Hot babes with superpowers are popular! And there's the curiosity factor. Plus, there's the lazy-guy syndrome: "Oh, look! A woman with a hammer! Hey, honey, can you go fix the fence while I eat chips and watch football? Thanks!"
In the DC universe, Pied Piper is gay. He has been since the mid 1980s. That was also when he reformed from his criminal ways and became a friend of the (Wally West) Flash. The best thing about it was his orientation was acknowledged but no big fuss was made about it.
Now all we need is a female Daredevil. C'mon, Murdoch can't be the only one with the powers and abilities to fight.
Then let's make a movie about Elektra. Edit: apparently there was one already. Guess I don't watch movies and read comics all that much.
Hmmm I'm not sure how many of us actually read comics on here. I myself an an extremely big reader of comics and very versed in superhero lore, of course I just don't read superheroes but they are a big part of my life. Soooooo I feel as though I should give an opinion on this. I don't like this lol XD or at least not yet. Didn't like how left field it was. Don't worry I've nothing against the new string of diverse comics I love the new Ms Marvel and female Thor is a nice shake up, and of course I understand the characters will change and grow over the years but this just doesn't sit right with me. Characters like Apollo, Midnighter, Northstar, Pie Piper etc Have all felt very genuine with their sexuality as homosexual men. In the case of Alan Scott (new 52) and Iceman it feels more like a marketing stunt then anything else. I mean before the New 52 happened Alan Scott had a wife and kids ....he was at least in his 70s-80s, a wise older hero. Of course perhaps my dislike of making Alan Scott younger and hipper is probably due to when I got into comics I was used to him as that version and as I've said I understand these changes will always happen. But I don't know It just doesn't feel like genuine to me, ya know? Like with Midnighter and such. I'm all for more support of the LGBT community in comics but I can't but feel that the gay characters that were around before this big eruption of diversity felt more like it was more like a natural character development to be rather then SURPRISE this character is gay now and then are tons of different articles and threads about it. (But that's more due to comics being bigger now and the internet to) Now note I myself am not gay but I do my best to write gay characters and I really do support it, I REALLY REALLY hope I didn't offend anyone with what I said. Its just really how I feel about this one coming out of a character. Bobby/Iceman is an awesome character, whether he is gay or straight and I'm excited to see where this goes. And to be fair he's had girlfriends before in the past and none of the relationships were really memorable (at least to me....though I havent read X Men in a looooong time), so this is probably going to be a good shake up on his romantic life and hopefully adds some new interesting stories in his love life. I actually think I've heard other comic fans comment that Iceman may have repressed homosexual feelings in old columns letters. So yeah. I think this one is more a marketing stunt but I think very great things could come of it! Also EXTREMELY ironically That episode of Family Guy aired waaaay before this No connection but pretty funny in hindsight lol XD I wouldn't be bothered to much. The Marvel Universe is about to go through a massive change.....as in I think they are going to reboot their universe like DC has done (a lot). So male Thor is probably going to be returning. Though Female Thor is cool, but with comics those kinda changes are only temporary. I could see them bringing back male Thor within the next couple years or so and renaming the female Thor or something,
On another note. There are two Icemen currently in the main Marvel world. Cause the current storyline is about the original teenage X Men being brought from the past into the current timeline. Time travel story of sorts. The one who was revealed to be gay was the teenage one. http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/ignore_jpg_scale_super/11121/111216631/4518657-4629847183-14295.jpg http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/ignore_jpg_scale_super/11121/111216631/4518660-0743594893-14295.jpg http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/ignore_jpg_scale_super/13/133675/4519207-tumblr_nn4ln1raz81tee1sho2_1280.jpg No word on the adult one but he seems to have hidden his sexuality over the years I know the worst part of comics is the confusing mythos, timeline and parallel reality stuff but I thought I should probably clarify the storyline and provide the scenes we are discussing. Very interesting story line so far
Still If my post up above was rude or offensive in anyway. I get kinda nervous when typing about things and on occasion can type things in a way I did not intend, which I really dont mean XD. Anyway I'm probably blowing up the thread now but wanted to make sure that if anything rude was said, didn't mean for it to sound that way XD. But I think it was alright.
I've read through this thread already but for some reason every time I see it in the right sidebar of the home-page I keep thinking it's going to be about Otzi.
The dude's got some crazy ink and they keep discerning new tats that were not seen before. I figured maybe they found a new one written in PIE that says "Otzi loves Kristof".
I, for one, would love to attend their marriage. Maybe their honeymoon could be going on a good long hunt.
LOL, I thought about that too. I don't read Marvel comics, so I actually have no idea who Iceman is. Does he get it on with another guy at any point? =P
I dunno about his gayness - that came along recently. Iceman was originally a teenage member of the X-men when they first were created in the 1960s. He's a mutant with the power to freeze anything almost instantly. Ever see The Incredibles? The character of Frozone in The Incredibles has the same power as Iceman.
No, we're talking about how Otzi the Caveman was gay. Yes we're talking about comics, dude. What else could we be discussing?
And Mister Freeze and Captain Cold...... Annnnnnd Killer Frost.......... There are a lot of cold themed costumed characters Though I always loved Mister Freeze's voice the best in the cartoons.
His name is Victor Fries, so it seems like he's of some kind of Germanic descent. I can't really find anything definitive about his nationality.
