    Punctuation rules apply to both, but style changes. Fragments, em-dashes, exclamation marks etc are accepted in creative writing, and passive voice, long sentences, semicolons, colons etc are de rigeur in academic writing.

    it's fine in the US, apparently... and would be fine anywhere, as long as you're consistent... if local custom calls for a space, it can be easily changed, if you are lucky enough to snag an agent/publisher who wants it otherwise...
