My dad is a big fan of the folk movement of people like that, and I can't say I've ever heard of him. Anyway, the quotation you posted is 53 words. It stops being acceptable to not properly cite quotations after a certain point, I forget what it is exactly, but it's a number between five and twenty. Maybe another user who has written academic articles recently can help me out here, but my rule of thumb is to 'cite it right' after the quote extents five words.
Just because something is well-known doesn't mean you don't cite the source. I don't know about anyone else, but I would call you out on it. I haven't heard this rule before. You should cite even if you quote one word. For example, Author A uses the word "blah" to describe the political situation in Country B in his book Blah Blah. I'm pretty sure that's how it goes.
Yeah, sorry - I'm an idiot, this is right. I was thinking of when you separate a quotation from the paragraph, or embed the quotation in the paragraph.
As long as you are not claiming it's your own work, I think you might not cite the source. This is a forum, it's not like Ginger was trying to get that quotation published. Rules or not, I'm with Ginger on this.
The issue is not my failure to post the artist's name. The issue is making this ridiculous spectacle out of it. And speaking of forum etiquette, is it really OK to suggest someone attempted plagiarism when they posted the lyrics of a famous song (whether people here recognized it or not, it is a famous song), and used quote marks? A simple, "who wrote that" would have sufficed. Instead we have a ridiculous thread hijack, a pedantic chastising, and people droning on and on over forum etiquette, which would be hilariously ironic considering the thread title if it weren't for the seriousness of the actual thread topic. In case no one noticed, I corrected the post. Now can we get back on topic? Edited to add: All the Och jokes are pretty clever. I'd like them all but I'm still concerned about the thread hijack which I feel a little responsibility for.
Not to sound like a jerk, but the rules are specific: So unless you got permission from Mr. Ochs or whomever owns the rights to his works now, you should have cited it. Just admit something was done wrong according to the rules and move on.
Ginger, I tend to take your side on a lot of things, but I think that here is definitely a situation where an appropriate response would have been, "Oops, sorry, I forgot; I've modified my post." That would have immediately closed the issue with no spectacle. I don't understand why you're fighting this one. A mistake is a mistake and is harmless; it's when you fight tooth and nail against calling it a mistake that things get messy.
If you'll forgive me, this argument really isn't my place. I don't care about this Lupe Fiasco one way or the other, I was just trying to get the academic rules on referencing out there, whatever they actually mean on an online forum. P.S. sorry for the very bad joke about Lupe Fiasco, it just felt so right!
This is not relevant. Quoting without citing the source is against the forum rules. There are reasons for these rules. Some of the rules are in place to ensure that what we do here is entirely legal. I was a member of another forum that was taken down because material was posted without proper citation and/or permission. It eventually came back on another host with very strict rules about exactly this issue. "Rules or not"? Are you suggesting it's okay for members to violate forum rules whenever they feel like it? That rules just don't matter? Surely not. Look, people. This should never have been an issue. All @GingerCoffee needed to do was cite the source in the first place. This whole conversation shouldn't even be happening. Let's drop it, okay? Let's all just get back to normal.
