I'm looking for a name for a little girl (seven) who has cancer. I want something really innocent sounding, but not too soft and shapeless. Any ideas? (The last name is Sailor.)
Jessamine , Cora, Camilla , Lily, Calla, Tessa, Cleo, Helena, Polly, Amelia, Emily, Paulina, Jocelyn, Lally, Winnie
Try flicking through a name book. You might find something you like that you've never heard of before. As for my personal opinion, I think Sophie is a soft sounding name. I think it's quite girly and innocent. However, you might hate the name ;p
How about...Laurel, Grace, Kylie, Emmaline, Lydia, Addison, Joy, Rosie, Mara, Hope, Millie, Ashlynn, Ana, Faith, Marie, Farah, Molly, Abigail/Abbie? Hope these bring inspiration of some sort.
Lizzy, Febbie, Charlotte, Pinky, Flora, Laurie, Maggie, Florenza, Becky or Becca Sailor, Cynthia, Bonita, Laila, Shirley, Gabriela, endless.
The Americans love the name Missy. Not my personal favourite though. Julia, Hope, Kate, Evelyn, Eva, Andrea, Lucy, Abigail, Chloe, Maria, Adeola, Olivia, Laura, Amy
Alice, Anne or Ann (Annie), Catherine/Katherine(Cate/Kate, Kitty, Kathy/Cathy), Stephanie, Rachel, Sarah/Sara, Elizabeth(Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Betty, Eliza, Eli, Ellie, Elle), Jessica (Jessie). Catherine/Katherine means "pure" or "unsullied", I think. Several other people suggested Sophie, which is a good name too. Bryn/Brin, Aria, Serena, Claire, Lucy, Isabel, Dana, Kira, Kyle, Lulu, Lela, Jane, Cara (means "beloved", I think), Miranda, Marissa, Penelope (Penny), Pippa, Aura, Daisy, June, or Jamie.
-Some of these are already up here, but others are new Elena,Claire/Clare ,Clarissa,Larissa,Mary/Mary Anne/Marianne ,Alice,Emily,Lucinda/Lucy (Lucy just sounds harmless even if it can be tied to Lucifer ),Cynthia,Amelia,Emily,Mary Jane (I know people with this name),Serenity,Hannah ,Hana (Hana can double as an east asian name,Hana means flower in japanese ),Amy. -Will be back with more when I can and I will try to dig for name meanings
Luna to me is quite a cute name, i absolutely love it. Lily is also another sweet name to have. Both names are very beautiful.
I've always thought the names of the months (April/May/June) come across as very girly and innocent. You can get the one-syllable, two- syllable flow and none of them end in an "s" so it won't be awkward with the last name.
I always thought Alice was very innocent and sweet sounding, perhaps partially because of the association with Alice in Wonderland, but even then.
This might be a matter of subjectivity. After all, even if you think any given name sounds sweet and innocent, it won't matter if a reader---someone out there---might have a different experience with the name (the name is tied to a person they dislike, for example, or is unlike the character with whom they share the name). On a more direct example, several of the names here are also the names given to characters of mine---none of them truly "innocent", or even "good." Depends, really. In any case, if the plethora of names presented here hasn't helped, I'll second the opinion on finding a website for names. Perhaps one for baby names for added innocence? Or if you're the type who cares about etymology, use a site like www.behindthename.com to find "meaningful" names. Just go with your gut on this one. Pick any name you like that you think really fits. It'll stick to the character and become inseparable from her.
I personally find names with lots of sonorants (m, n, r, l, y, w) to be the sweetest sounding, but it is a matter of taste.
Elizabeth, Catherine, Anna, Mary, May, and among several names you can search and find their etymology and thus understand the history and morale behind a name.
